When to Read
This dua is ideal to recite just before heading into a crucial negotiation, a difficult meeting, or any situation where you need divine guidance and wisdom to make the right decisions and communicate effectively. It’s also beneficial to make it a habit to recite this dua regularly, especially at the start of your day, to imbue your daily actions with purpose and seek Allah's blessing in all your endeavors.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and full concentration. Imagine Allah (SWT) hearing your supplication. Picture the 'beneficial knowledge' as the clarity you need for the negotiation, the 'goodly provision' as a successful and fair outcome, and the 'acceptable deeds' as conducting yourself with integrity and speaking the truth. Raising your hands slightly can be done, as is customary in many duas, but it is not a strict requirement for this particular supplication. Facing the Qiblah can also add to the focus of your prayer.
Virtues & Benefits
This comprehensive dua, taught by our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, is a powerful request for all-encompassing goodness. By asking for 'beneficial knowledge' ('ilman naafi'an), you are seeking wisdom and understanding, which is crucial for navigating complex negotiations. This isn't just about academic knowledge, but insight into people, situations, and the best course of action. The request for 'goodly provision' (rizqan tayyiban) can encompass not only financial sustenance but also a positive and fair outcome from the negotiation that is blessed and free from ill-gotten gains. Finally, asking for 'acceptable deeds' ('amalan mutaqabbalan) ensures that your actions during and after the negotiation are pleasing to Allah, even if the outcome isn't exactly as you hoped. It keeps you grounded in good conduct. This dua was taught by the Prophet ﷺ to Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) when she asked him what to say when seeking refuge from what is evil, and it highlights the importance of seeking positive and acceptable outcomes in all our affairs.
Source & Authentication
Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) performed the morning prayer, he would say: O Allah, I ask You for knowledge that is beneficial, sustenance that is good and lawful, and deeds that are acceptable. [Sunan Ibn Majah 925]. The context here is seeking protection and positive outcomes, which directly applies to seeking clarity and divine insight in challenging situations like negotiations.
