اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُمْ وَارْحَمْهُمْ وَعَافِهِمْ وَاعْفُ عَنْهُمْ، اللَّهُمَّ ثَبِّتْهُمْ

O Allah, forgive them, have mercy on them, grant them well-being, and pardon them. O Allah, make them firm.

Allahumma-ghfir lahum warhamhum wa 'aafihim wa-'fu 'anhum. Allahumma thabbit-hum.

When to Read

This dua is specifically recommended to be recited when visiting the grave of a Muslim, or when accompanying a funeral procession. It can also be recited when offering condolences to the family of the deceased. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua for the deceased, seeking forgiveness and steadfastness for them in the hereafter.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated that when a person recites this dua for their deceased brother, angels say 'Amen' to what is said, and the deceased is granted something similar to that.

Narrated by Uthman ibn Affan (may Allah be pleased with him): When the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ finished burying the dead, he would stand and say: 'Ask forgiveness for your brother and pray for his steadfastness, for he is now being questioned.'
