اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ
Our Lord, give us in this world [that which is] good and in the Hereafter [that which is] good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.
Allahumma Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina 'adhaban-nar
When to Read
This powerful dua, seeking the best of both worlds and protection from the Hellfire, is highly recommended to be recited frequently, especially on Fridays. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to recite it, and its comprehensive nature makes it suitable for any time, but its particular emphasis on asking Allah for goodness in this life and the next aligns beautifully with the spiritual atmosphere of Jumu'ah. Many scholars advise reciting it after the obligatory prayers or at other opportune moments throughout the day, particularly during the blessed hours of Friday.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincere intention and heartfelt supplication. Raise your hands as you would in any dua, facing the Qiblah if possible. Understand the profound meaning: asking for well-being, success, and happiness in this transient life, and eternal bliss in the hereafter, while simultaneously seeking refuge from the eternal torment of the Fire. Reflect on the vastness of Allah's mercy as you utter these words.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua is one of the most comprehensive supplications taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. It encompasses seeking the best of both this world and the next, a complete request that leaves no aspect of a Muslim's life unaddressed. By asking for 'hasanah' (goodness) in this world, we seek provisions, health, knowledge, righteous family, and all that is beneficial. By asking for 'hasanah' in the Hereafter, we aim for Allah's pleasure, entry into Paradise, and a favorable reckoning. Seeking refuge from the Hellfire is a crucial plea for salvation. The Prophet ﷺ himself would often supplicate with this dua, highlighting its immense value.
