Friday / Jumuah
Hasan HadithSunan At-Tirmidhi 3503

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ رِضَاكَ وَالْجَنَّةَ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ سَخَطِكَ وَالنَّارِ

O Allah, I ask for Your pleasure and Paradise, and I seek refuge in You from Your displeasure and the Fire.

Allahumma inni as'aluka ridhak wal-jannah wa a'udhu bika min sakhatika wan-nar

When to Read

This dua is particularly potent when recited after the Asr prayer on Friday. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ mentioned that a specific time on Friday, between the Asr prayer and sunset, is a time when du'as are accepted. It's also a beautiful supplication to make throughout Friday, especially after Jumu'ah prayer, as we reflect on the blessings of this day and seek to align ourselves with Allah's pleasure.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a humble heart. Face the Qiblah if possible, and begin by praising Allah and sending blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Understand the meaning of what you are asking for: the ultimate goal of a believer is Allah's pleasure, which leads to Paradise, and protection from His anger and the Hellfire. Make a conscious effort to implement its meaning in your life by striving to please Allah in your actions and choices.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication encapsulates the core desires of a believer: seeking Allah's pleasure, which is the highest attainment, and the ultimate reward of Paradise. It also demonstrates foresight and wisdom by seeking refuge from Allah's displeasure and the Hellfire. The hadith mentioning this dua highlights its comprehensiveness, covering both aspirations for the Hereafter and protection from its calamities. By focusing on Allah's pleasure, we orient our lives towards actions that are pleasing to Him, which naturally leads to seeking forgiveness for past shortcomings. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this comprehensive dua as a means to attain the greatest of blessings and avoid the gravest of punishments.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'When Friday comes, at every gate of the gates of the Masjid are angels who write down the people in order of arrival. Then comes the one who rides a camel, then the one who rides a horse, then the one who rides a mule, then the one who rides a donkey, then the one who rides a bicycle, then the one who walks. The one who arrives early is like one who sacrifices a camel. The one who comes next is like one who sacrifices a cow. The one who comes next is like one who sacrifices a horn. The one who comes next is like one who sacrifices a chicken. The one who comes next is like one who sacrifices an egg. Then the Imam comes out, and the pages are rolled up and the listeners listen to the reminder. Then whoever leaves after the prayer, and has not prayed two rak'ahs, has missed out on much good. And whoever says after the Fajr prayer on Friday: > **Arabic:** اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ رِضَاكَ وَالْجَنَّةَ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ سَخَطِكَ وَالنَّارِ > **Translation:** "O Allah, I ask for Your pleasure and Paradise, and I seek refuge in You from Your displeasure and the Fire." > **Transliteration:** *Allahumma inni as'aluka ridhak wal-jannah wa a'udhu bika min sakhatika wan-nar* – then if he dies on that day, he dies having attained the result of his dua, and if he lives, he lives having attained much good.' (Sunan At-Tirmidhi 3503 - This narration is classified as Hasan by many scholars, though some may have different opinions on the chain of transmission. The core meaning and the importance of seeking Allah's pleasure are well-established.)
