Dua for a Peaceful Heart during the Friday Khutbah

Friday / Jumuah
Sahih HadithSunan Ibn Majah 925

اللَّهُمَّ إنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا، وَرِزْقًا طَيِّبًا، وَعَمَلًا مُتَقَبَّلًا

O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, good provision, and acceptable deeds.

Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman naafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan

When to Read

This beautiful dua is recommended to be recited after the Fajr prayer on Friday. It can also be a powerful supplication to make silently during the Friday khutbah itself, especially when seeking to focus your heart and mind on the message being delivered, and to ask Allah to make the sermon beneficial for you.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a focused heart. It is a request to Allah for things that truly matter: knowledge that benefits, provision that is pure, and deeds that are accepted. When making dua during the khutbah, do so silently, keeping your focus on the Imam and the essence of the sermon, asking Allah to purify your intentions and open your heart to the guidance.

Virtues & Benefits

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua to his wife Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) as a prayer to be said every morning after Fajr. The benefits are immense: seeking 'ilman naafi'an (beneficial knowledge) helps us understand our Deen better and act upon it; rizqan tayyiban (good provision) means sustenance that is lawful and blessed; and 'amalan mutaqabbalan (acceptable deeds) are those done sincerely for Allah and in accordance with His commands. Making this plea during the khutbah can transform the experience from passive listening to an active engagement with Allah's guidance, fostering a peaceful and receptive heart.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to say, upon finishing the morning prayer (Fajr), and before speaking to anyone: > Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman naafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan. > (O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, good provision, and acceptable deeds.) This hadith is found in Sunan Ibn Majah (925) and is considered Sahih by many scholars.
