Dua for Strength to Overcome Procrastination on Friday

Friday / Jumuah
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6369

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and grief, I seek refuge in You from helplessness and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the burden of debt and the oppression of men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijal.

When to Read

This powerful dua is particularly beneficial to recite on Friday, the day of gathering and supplication. Make it a habit to say it in the morning before the day's tasks begin, or even during the time of 'Asr prayer on Friday when supplications are believed to be more readily answered. Seeking Allah's refuge from laziness and helplessness is crucial as we tackle our responsibilities, especially those that require diligence like preparing for Jumu'ah or fulfilling its obligations.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and a hopeful heart. It's best to raise your hands as you would during other supplications, especially when saying it during the times when dua is more accepted, like after 'Asr prayer on Friday. Visualize yourself being empowered by Allah to overcome any inertia or lack of motivation. Repeating it can also strengthen its effect.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua, taught by our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, directly addresses the root causes of procrastination: helplessness and laziness ('ajz and kasal). By seeking Allah's refuge from these, we are asking for His help to energize us, give us the willpower, and provide us with the means to act. Overcoming procrastination allows us to be more productive, fulfill our duties to Allah and creation, and feel a sense of accomplishment rather than regret. The inclusion of seeking refuge from worry, grief, cowardice, stinginess, debt, and oppression highlights how these issues are interconnected and can fuel feelings of overwhelm, leading to inaction. Addressing them through sincere dua is a holistic approach to strengthening our resolve.

(O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and grief, I seek refuge in You from helplessness and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the burden of debt and the oppression of men.)
