Dua for Protection from the Grave's Torments on Friday

Friday / Jumuah
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 1377

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the torment of the grave, and from the torment of the Hellfire, and from the trials of life and death, and from the evil of the trial of the False Messiah (Dajjal).

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhab al-qabr, wa min 'adhab an-nar, wa min fitnat al-mahya wal-mamat, wa min sharri fitnat al-masih ad-dajjal

When to Read

This powerful supplication is recommended to be recited after the Tashahhud in the prayer, before the salam. It is especially pertinent to remember on Friday, as many good deeds are amplified on this blessed day. Making it a habit to seek refuge from the grave's torments regularly, particularly on a day of congregation like Jumu'ah, is a sign of foresight and a deep understanding of the realities beyond this life.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a heartfelt understanding of its meaning. Focus on each phrase as you utter it, truly seeking Allah's protection. It is typically recited after the final part of the prayer (Tashahhud) but before concluding with the salam. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would often teach his companions these comprehensive supplications, emphasizing their importance.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encompasses seeking refuge from four major perils: the torment of the grave, the torment of the Hellfire, the trials and tribulations of this world and the hereafter, and the specific, devastating trial of the Dajjal. By regularly invoking this dua, we are actively asking Allah to shield us from these immense hardships, both in this life and the next. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself would frequently make this dua, as seen in numerous hadith collections, highlighting its significance.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'When any one of you finishes the last (Tashahhud) of his prayers, he should seek refuge with Allah from four things, saying: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhab al-jahannam, wa min 'adhab al-qabr, wa min fitnat al-mahya wal-mamat, wa min sharri fitnat ad-dajjal.' (O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the torment of Hell, the torment of the grave, the trials of life and death, and the evil of the trial of the Dajjal). Then he can say anything he likes.'
