Friday / Jumuah
Sahih HadithInvocations 6369

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, from inability and laziness, from stinginess and cowardice, and from the burden of debt and from being overpowered by men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-ḥazan, wal-'ajzi wal-kasal, wal-bukhli wal-jubn, wa ḍala'id-dayni wa ghalabatir-rijal.

When to Read

We all face moments where worries weigh heavy, or sadness casts a shadow. This powerful dua, seeking refuge from the very things that disturb our peace, is perfect for those times. We especially encourage reciting it on Friday afternoon, during the blessed hour after Asr prayer until Maghrib. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ informed us there is a unique moment on Friday when any Muslim making dua will have their supplication answered. Many scholars consider this precious window to be between Asr and Maghrib, making it an ideal time to pour out your heart to Allah for inner peace and serenity.

How to Read

Approach this dua with a sincere heart, turning to Allah with full conviction that He alone can remove your burdens. Find a quiet space, ideally after you’ve prayed Asr on Friday. You can face the Qibla and raise your hands, a posture of humility and hope. Recite the Arabic text clearly, contemplating the profound meaning of each phrase. Reflect on the specific anxieties or sorrows you wish for Allah to lift, and how you truly seek refuge in Him from these internal and external struggles. Let your prayer be a conversation with your Creator.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this comprehensive dua offers profound benefits, acting as a spiritual shield against many sources of inner turmoil. It directly addresses anxiety (*hamm*) and sorrow (*ḥazan*), which are often the biggest thieves of our peace. By seeking refuge from inability and laziness, we ask Allah for strength and drive to improve ourselves and our circumstances. The plea against stinginess and cowardice helps purify our character, fostering generosity and bravery. Finally, asking for protection from the burden of debt and being overpowered by others tackles common external pressures that can lead to significant stress. When recited during the accepted hour on Friday, the reward and potential for its acceptance are magnified, bringing tranquility and reassurance to your soul.
