اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا، وَرِزْقًا طَيِّبًا، وَعَمَلًا مُتَقَبَّلًا.
O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, pure provision, and acceptable deeds.
Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman naafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan.
When to Read
This dua is particularly potent when made on a Friday, especially after the Asr prayer, as it's a time when Allah's mercy descends and supplications are often accepted. You can make it specifically when contemplating your career path, feeling uncertain about your next steps, or seeking clarity on what work aligns best with your deen and dunya. It's a prayer for well-being in both this life and the next, making it perfect for seeking guidance on a significant life decision like career choice.
How to Read
Begin by making sincere intention (niyyah) about seeking guidance for your career. Recite 'Bismillah' and send blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Raise your hands, palms facing upwards, and humbly supplicate with this dua. Speak from your heart, focusing on seeking Allah's help to choose a path that is pleasing to Him and beneficial for you. Conclude by sending blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ again and wiping your hands over your face. It's best to say this with conviction and certainty that Allah hears and will respond.
Virtues & Benefits
This powerful dua, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, encompasses immense benefit. 'Beneficial knowledge' ('ilman naafi'an) guides you not only in your career but also in your understanding of Islam. 'Pure provision' (rizqan tayyiban) ensures that your livelihood is lawful and blessed, free from haram. 'Acceptable deeds' ('amalan mutaqabbalan) means that the work you do and your efforts will be recognized and rewarded by Allah. By asking for these three things, you are seeking a holistic approach to your career, ensuring it contributes positively to your spiritual and worldly well-being, aligning your life's work with pleasing Allah.
Source & Authentication
Narrated by Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both): The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to recite these words when he would finish his gathering: 'O Allah, O Lord of this world and the Hereafter, O God of my fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, Creator of the heavens and the earth, Knower of the unseen and the seen, You judge between Your servants in that wherein they differ. Guide me to the truths concerning that wherein they differ, by Your leave. Verily, You guide whom You will to the straight path.' He also used to say: 'O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, pure provision, and acceptable deeds.' (Sunan Ibn Majah 925, and also narrated in part in Sahih Muslim 712). *Note: The specific phrase 'Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman naafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan' is a distinct supplication that the Prophet ﷺ would often make, as found in various hadith collections, often after Fajr prayer or at the end of gatherings. The context here is focusing on its applicability to career choice, especially on Friday.*
