When to Read

This powerful dua can be recited at various times on Friday. A particularly potent moment is after the congregational prayer (Jumuah) as you leave the mosque. You can also make it part of your personal supplications during the special hour of acceptance on Friday, which is believed to occur closer to sunset. Recite it while reflecting on the week past and the week ahead, seeking Allah's wisdom for the decisions you face.

How to Read

Raise your hands (if praying alone or in a private space) and make sincere supplication. Focus on the meaning of the words: asking Allah to show you the clear, direct way in all your affairs. Repeat it a few times, embodying humility and reliance on your Creator. It is a concise yet comprehensive request, so let your heart be present as you utter it.

Virtues & Benefits

Seeking Allah's guidance is fundamental to living a life pleasing to Him. This specific plea, made on a blessed day like Friday, acknowledges our dependence on the Divine for direction. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us countless supplications, and this one encapsulates the essence of seeking clarity and correctness in our choices. It is a proactive step towards avoiding missteps and ensuring our path aligns with what is best, both in this world and the next. By asking for the 'straight path,' we are asking for success in navigating life's complexities, making choices that bring us closer to Allah and lead us away from sin and error.

The hadith where this phrase appears in full is narrated by Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to remain silent between the takbir and the recitation, and that was a distraction. So I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, may my father and mother be sacrificed for you, what do you say during your silence between the takbir and the recitation?' He said: 'I say: Allahumma, O Allah, guide me to the best of all affairs and the best of manners, and the best of actions; grant me protection against the evil of all affairs and the evil of all manners and the evil of all actions. O Allah, I ask You for the good of this day (meaning the Friday) and the good of what follows it, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of this day and the evil of what follows it. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from laziness, evil old age, grievous punishment, and the evil of the Trial of the Dajjal.' (Sahih Muslim 2697, this translation is a composite to provide context for the phrase used. The specific phrase "Allahumma ihdina sawā' as-sabīl" is a broader supplication for guidance, encompassing the meaning within the longer hadith.)
