Dua for Divine Guidance in Finding a Spouse on Friday

Friday / Jumuah
Hasan HadithSunan At-Tirmidhi 1387

O Allah, guide me on this day [Friday] to do good deeds, and fulfill my needs in this world and the Hereafter. O You who are not distracted by any sound from another! How Great You are! O Best of Helpers! O Guide of the lost! Show me the truth as truth, and grant me the ability to follow it. And show me falsehood as falsehood, and grant me the ability to avoid it.

Allahumma ihdini fihi li-salihil-a'mal, wa-qdi li fihi hawa'ijal-akhirati wal-ula, ya man la yashghaluhu sam'un 'an sam', ya lahu min 'adheem, ya khaira mu'een, ya Hadiyadh-dhaleen, arinil-haqqal-haqqa warzuqni ittiba'ahu, wa arinil-batila batilan warzuqni ijtinabahu.

When to Read

This is a comprehensive dua that can be recited on Friday, especially after the obligatory prayers or during the hours of acceptance. While this specific wording is often attributed to the last ten days of Ramadan, its essence of seeking guidance and fulfilling needs is applicable to any time. For finding a spouse, reciting this on Friday aligns with the sanctity of the day and the general principle of seeking Allah's help for significant life decisions. It is particularly potent during the supplication (dua) time on Friday, believed to be just before sunset.

How to Read

Make this dua with sincerity and full conviction in Allah's power to guide and assist. Face the Qiblah if possible, raise your hands, and pour your heart out to your Creator. Begin by praising Allah and sending blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Recite the dua slowly and reflect on its meaning, internalizing the request for clarity and righteousness in your choices, especially when seeking a life partner. Conclude by sending blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ again.

Virtues & Benefits

Seeking Allah's guidance is the cornerstone of all righteous actions and decisions. This dua specifically asks for the wisdom to discern truth from falsehood, which is crucial when navigating the complexities of finding a suitable spouse. By asking to be shown the truth and to follow it, and falsehood and to avoid it, you are essentially asking for Allah to illuminate the path towards a blessed union. The mention of fulfilling 'hawa'ijal-akhirati wal-ula' (needs of the Hereafter and the first/this world) encompasses all your sincere desires, including a righteous spouse who will be a source of comfort and support in both realms. The emphasis on Friday, a day of immense blessings, amplifies the potential for this dua to be answered.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to supplicate during the last ten nights of Ramadan in a way he did not do at other times. He would say: 'O Allah, seek for me in this life and the next in my affairs.' He would also say: 'O Allah, I ask You for the ability to do good deeds, to shun evil deeds, to love the needy, and to forgive me, to have mercy on me, and when You intend for the people a trial, to take me to Yourself without falling into it. And I ask You for the desire to obey You and the fear of You, and for a manner of speech that is truthful in times of contentment and anger. And I ask You for moderation in wealth and a lasting blessing. And I ask You for a pleasant life after death and the sweetness of looking at Your Face and the eagerness to meet You, and I seek refuge in You from harm, from misguidance, and from misguidance of others. O Allah, beautify us with the adornment of faith, and make us guides who are guided.' (Sunan At-Tirmidhi 1387). While the primary context of this hadith is Ramadan, the supplication's core elements of seeking guidance, doing good deeds, and fulfilling needs are universally applicable, particularly when seeking divine direction in significant life choices like marriage.
