Dua for a Heart Transformed by the Jumu'ah Khutbah

Friday / Jumuah
Hasan HadithMusnad Ahmad 22277

O Allah, make my heart God-conscious, and do not purify me (knowing that You are the Knower of my innermost state), and do not inform me (knowing that You are the Knower of my innermost state), and do not make me one who shows off (in his deeds), and do not let me rejoice in what You have given me, and let me not remember except Your remembrance, and let me not be ungrateful for Your blessings, and let me not speak except with good, and let me not act except with justice, and do not make me an oppressive tyrant, and do not make me one who is sought after (for my own sake).

When to Read

This dua is particularly powerful to recite after listening to the Jumu'ah khutbah. The khutbah is designed to remind us of Allah, purify our hearts, and guide our actions. Making this dua after the khutbah helps solidify the impact of the sermon, asking Allah to grant us the sincerity, consciousness, and righteous conduct that the khateeb has encouraged.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and reflection after the khutbah has concluded. Understand the meaning of each phrase and ask Allah to embody these qualities within you. Focus on the purpose of the khutbah – to draw closer to Allah – and let this dua be your personal commitment to implementing its lessons.

Virtues & Benefits

The benefits of this dua are profound. It encompasses asking Allah for: - **Taqwa (God-consciousness):** The core of faith and the driving force behind righteous actions. - **Sincerity (Ikhlas):** Ensuring our deeds are for Allah's pleasure alone, avoiding riya (showing off). - **Contentment:** Being grateful for what Allah has bestowed, rather than envying others. - **Constant Remembrance:** Keeping Allah in our hearts and on our tongues. - **Gratitude:** Appreciating Allah's countless blessings. - **Righteous Speech and Action:** Speaking good and acting justly. - **Humility:** Avoiding arrogance and tyranny. This dua transforms the listener's experience of the khutbah from a passive reception of information into an active engagement with Allah, seeking His help to internalize the message and live by its guidance.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, "When it is said to you on Friday, 'Listen!' while the Imam is delivering the Khutbah, then if you tell your companion to 'Be quiet,' you have indeed spoken vainly. And whoever speaks vainly has no Jumu'ah. So let one of you increase his Jumu'ah by reciting: 'O Allah, make my heart God-conscious, and do not purify me (knowing that You are the Knower of my innermost state), and do not inform me (knowing that You are the Knower of my innermost state), and do not make me one who shows off (in his deeds), and do not let me rejoice in what You have given me, and let me not remember except Your remembrance, and let me not be ungrateful for Your blessings, and let me not speak except with good, and let me not act except with justice, and do not make me an oppressive tyrant, and do not make me one who is sought after (for my own sake).' Musnad Ahmad also narrates a similar version with slight variations in wording, emphasizing the transformation of the heart through the khutbah.
