O Allah, we ask You by Your knowledge of the unseen and Your power over creation. Keep us alive so long as You know that life is better for us, and cause us to die when You know that death is better for us. O Allah, we ask You for Your fear in secret and in public. We ask You for the word of truth in contentment and in anger. We ask You for moderation in poverty and wealth. We ask You for blessings that never cease, and for coolness of the eye that never diminishes. We ask You for contentment after Your decree, and for a pleasant life after death. We ask You for the delight of looking at Your Face, and for the longing to meet You. We seek refuge in You from harmful hardship and from misleading trials. O Allah, adorn us with the adornment of faith, and make us guides who are guided, neither astray nor leading others astray. O Allah, suffice us with Your lawful provision instead of Your unlawful provision, and enrich us with Your bounty, independent of all except You. Our Lord, give us in this world [that which is] good and in the Hereafter [that which is] good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.
Allahumma ikfina bi-halalika 'an haramik, wa aghnina bi-fadlika 'amman siwak. Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina 'adhaban-nar.
When to Read
This comprehensive dua is particularly fitting for Jumu'ah, the blessed day of congregation. You can recite it individually after the obligatory prayers, or as part of your personal supplications during the special hour on Friday when duas are more likely to be accepted. It’s also a beautiful prayer to make for the entire Muslim Ummah, reflecting our interconnectedness and shared aspirations for a righteous future.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincere intention and focus. It's best to raise your hands as you would in any other dua, but ensure you lower them before completing the supplication. Face the Qiblah if possible, and maintain a state of humility and reliance on Allah. The repetition of 'Allahumma inna nas'aluka' (O Allah, we ask You) emphasizes our humble petition to the Almighty. The final part, 'Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanah...' is from the Quran, so it should be recited with the same reverence as any Quranic verse.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua encapsulates a profound seeking of Allah's blessings for both this life and the hereafter. It asks for guidance, contentment, protection from trials, and sustenance, covering the comprehensive needs of a believer. By praying for the Ummah, we tap into the immense reward of collective supplication and strengthen the bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to ask for comprehensive good, and this dua is a beautiful example of that principle, encompassing spiritual, material, and eternal well-being.
