A Friday Dua for a Blessed Marriage Proposal

Friday / Jumuah
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 107

O Allah, I ask You for its [the woman's] goodness and the goodness You have naturally inclined her towards, and I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil You have naturally inclined her towards.

Allahumma inni as'aluka khayraha wa khayra ma jabaltaha 'alayh, wa a'udhu bika min sharriha wa sharri ma jabaltaha 'alayh.

When to Read

This dua is particularly potent when making a proposal for marriage, especially on a blessed day like Friday. It can be recited before meeting the family of the prospective bride, or even during the proposal itself if the circumstances allow for a moment of sincere supplication. Making this dua on Friday leverages the special virtues of this day for seeking Allah's blessings.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, focusing on your intention for a righteous and blessed union. Raise your hands in supplication as is the custom when making dua. Ensure you have a clear intention for seeking goodness in the marriage and protection from any potential ill consequences. Understanding the meaning deeply will enhance the impact of your supplication.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, is a comprehensive request for the best in both the person you are seeking to marry and the natural disposition Allah has given them. It seeks blessings for the union and protection from any hidden evils or negative traits. Reciting it on Friday amplifies the potential for Allah's acceptance, as Friday is a day of great merit for supplication. The Prophet ﷺ himself said, 'Three prayers are answered without doubt: the prayer of the oppressed, the prayer of the traveler, and the father's prayer for his child' (Tirmidhi 1905, Hasan). While this specific dua is for a proposal, the principle of seeking Allah's best on a blessed day extends to all sincere supplications.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Jabir that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught them the Istikhara prayer in all matters as he taught them Surahs of the Qur'an. He said: 'If any of you is concerned about a matter, he should pray two rak'ahs of non-obligatory prayer, and then say: O Allah, I seek guidance from Your knowledge, and control through Your power, and I beg from Your magnificence. For You has power, but I have none. And You know, but I know not. You are the Knower of the unseen. O Allah, if in Your knowledge this matter (then he should mention it) is good for my religion and my subsistence and for the Hereafter (or he said: for this life and the Hereafter), then ordain it for me, make it easy for me, and bless it for me. O Allah, if in Your knowledge it is bad for my religion and my subsistence and the Hereafter (or he said: for this life and the Hereafter), then turn it away from me and turn me away from it, and ordain for me the good wherever it may be and make me content with it.' He said: 'And he should name his need.' (Reported by al-Bukhari). The dua provided above is specifically for the proposal stage, asking for the goodness of the woman and her disposition.
