Forgiveness
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2708

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the disappearance of Your blessings, and the change of Your good health, and the suddenness of Your punishment, and all of Your displeasure. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from distress and sorrow, and I seek refuge in You from helplessness and laziness, and I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from being overwhelmed by debt and overcome by men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matika, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatika, wa faja'ati niqmatika, wa jami'i sakhatika. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahri ar-rijali.

When to Read

This is a comprehensive dua that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would often recite. It is particularly beneficial to invoke when feeling overwhelmed by worries, facing difficulties, or when seeking protection from falling into sins that might incur Allah's displeasure. It can be recited in the morning and evening, or at any time you feel the need for Allah's protection and guidance.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and deep contemplation. Understand that you are truly turning to Allah for refuge from various evils, including His anger, which can stem from our transgressions. Raise your hands in supplication if possible, and feel the weight of seeking Allah's protection. It's a dua that covers both seeking refuge from external trials and internal weaknesses that can lead to sin.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a powerful shield against various forms of hardship and moral decline. By seeking refuge from the 'disappearance of blessings' and 'change of good health,' we acknowledge our dependence on Allah and seek His continued favor. The specific mention of seeking refuge from 'all of Your displeasure' directly addresses the fear of angering Allah, often a consequence of sins we commit. It also covers mental anguish (distress and sorrow) and debilitating traits (helplessness and laziness), as well as character flaws (cowardice and stinginess) and external pressures (debt and oppression). Reciting this diligently can bring immense peace of mind and strengthen our resolve to stay away from displeasing Allah.

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Companions used to say to the Prophet (ﷺ), "O Allah's Messenger! We want you to teach us some words that we may say in the morning. He said: 'Say: O Allah, Knower of the unseen and the Apparent, Creator of the heavens and the earth, Lord of everything and its Possessor, the Granter of death, I bear witness that there is no god but You, I seek refuge in You from the evil of my soul and from the evil of the devil and his followers, and I seek refuge in You from indulging in evil or leading another into it, or dragging him into it, or being oppressed by him or oppressing him, or reviling him or insulting him, or by any means whatsoever, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of what You have seized by the forelock.' 'Abdullah b. Ghannam said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'One of you should say in the morning: O Allah, I ask You for benefit in the case of those whom You have favored, and well-being in my body, and guidance, and blessings in sustenance, and repentance before death, and comfort at death, and forgiveness after death. O Allah, I ask You for joy in the time of decree, and an easy life after death, and a pleasant life while You are pleased with me, and the attainment of the right means, and protection from the evil of the world, and protection from the evil of the Hereafter. O Allah, grant us the will to be grateful for Your favors, that we may be rightly praised for them, and that we may be the first to benefit from them, and that we may keep them and never lose them. O Allah, we ask You for a prayer that is answered, and a sustenance that is abundant, and a repentance that is never broken, and the cause of which is not invalidated, and the repentance that is not accepted. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the disappearance of Your blessings, and the change of Your good health, and the suddenness of Your punishment, and all of Your displeasure. And I seek refuge in You from the evil of the devil and his followers, and from being deceived. And I seek refuge in You from helpless, and laziness, and cowardice, and stinginess, and old age, and death, and from the punishment of the Hellfire, and from the punishment of the grave, and from the trials of the world and the Hereafter. And I seek refuge in You from being overwhelmed by debt and overcome by men.' And these words are 'Ubadah b. as-Samit. And he said: 'My Lord, I ask of You patience. My Lord, I ask of You patience.' But in the narration of Zuhayr: 'and from the afflictions of the Dajjal.' And in the narration of Abu Kuraib: 'and from the evil of the devil and his associates.' And in the narration of Ibn al-Muthanna: 'and from the oppression of men.' And he said: 'I said to 'Ubadah b. as-Samit: 'What is this prayer?' He said: 'The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'Whoever says this prayer in the morning and dies that day, he will die with faith, and whoever says it in the evening and dies that night, he will die with faith.' 'Ubadah b. as-Samit said: 'The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) taught us these words and to write them down.' (Sahih Muslim 110).
