Seeking Allah's Forgiveness: A Dua for Spiritual Renewal

Forgiveness
Hasan HadithMusnad Ahmad 1/391

O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is forever executed. Your judgment on me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or revealed to anyone from Your creation, or sent down in Your Book, or kept hidden in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Qur'an the springtime of my heart, the light of my chest, the banisher of my grief, and the remover of my anxiety.

Allahumma inni 'abdika, ibn 'abdika, ibn amatika, nasiyati biyadika, madin fiyya hulumuka, 'adlun fiyya qada'uka, as'aluka bikulli ismin huwa laka, sammayta bihi nafsaka, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqika, aw anzaltahu fi kitabika, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilm il-ghaybi 'indaka, an taj'ala al-Qur'ana rabi'a qalbi, wa nura sadri, wa jila'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi.

This powerful dua is especially pertinent when you feel your faith wavering, your connection to Allah weakening, or when you're weighed down by worries and sadness. It's perfect for those moments of spiritual dryness, acknowledging that the true source of solace and renewal is Allah and His Book.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and humility, acknowledging your dependence on Allah. Raising your hands, as you would in supplication, can enhance the feeling of earnestness. Reflect deeply on the meaning of the words, internalizing the request for the Qur'an to be the source of comfort and guidance for your heart. It can be recited at any time, but is particularly effective in the quiet hours of the night or after prayers.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates a comprehensive request to Allah. By asking for the Qur'an to be the 'springtime of the heart,' it signifies a desire for spiritual revival and growth, just as spring brings life back to the earth. The 'light of the chest' points to clarity of vision and understanding, while seeking the banishment of grief and anxiety highlights the Qur'an's power to bring peace and tranquility. It's a beautiful affirmation of reliance on Allah and His divine guidance during times of spiritual difficulty.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: 'No person suffers any anxiety or grief, and then says: O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is forever executed. Your judgment on me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or revealed to anyone from Your creation, or sent down in Your Book, or kept hidden in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Qur'an the springtime of my heart, the light of my chest, the banisher of my grief, and the remover of my anxiety - except that Allah will remove his anxiety and grief, and replace them with happiness.' It was said: 'O Messenger of Allah, should we not learn these words?' He said: 'Yes, it is appropriate for everyone who hears them to learn them.' (Narrated by Ahmad and others, and authenticated by Al-Albani as Hasan)
