Dua for Forgiveness and Unlocking Marriage Prospects

Forgiveness
Hasan HadithSunan Ibn Majah 3834

O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your female servant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is inevitable. Your decree concerning me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or revealed to any of Your creation, or sent down in Your Book, or have preserved in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Qur'an the spring of my heart, and the light of my chest, and a banisher of my grief, and a reliever of my worry.

Allahumma inni 'abduka, ibn 'abdika, ibn amatika, nasiyati biyadika, madin fiyya hukmuka, 'adlun fiyya qada'uka. As'aluka bikulli ismin huwa lak, sammayta bihi nafsaka, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqika, aw anzaltahu fi kitabi-ka, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilm-il-ghaybi 'indaka, an taj'ala al-Qur'ana rabia'a qalbi, wa noora sadri, wa jala'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi.

When to Read

This profound supplication can be recited at any time, but it's particularly impactful during the quiet hours of the night, after prayers, or any moment you feel a deep connection with Allah. It's especially beneficial when you feel overwhelmed by worries or seek divine help in overcoming personal hurdles, including those that may be hindering your marriage prospects. Making sincere repentance (istighfar) before or after this dua can amplify its effect.

How to Read

Recite with sincere intention and a humble heart, acknowledging Allah's absolute power and sovereignty. Imagine the Qur'an not just as a book, but as a living source of guidance and comfort. Ensure you are in a state of purity (wudu) if possible. Focus on the meaning of the words as you utter them, internalizing the reliance on Allah for all matters, including finding a righteous spouse and removing obstacles.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to a companion who was struggling with worries, is comprehensive. By asking Allah using His most beautiful names and attributes, and by seeking the Qur'an as a source of solace, you are directly addressing your concerns. Forgiveness is implicitly sought through sincere reliance and turning to Allah. The removal of obstacles to marriage can be a result of Allah's decree changing due to this sincere and comprehensive plea. The Prophet ﷺ said, 'No one who has an atom's weight of faith in his heart turns to Allah with this dua, but Allah will take away what is in his heart [of worry and sadness].' (Ahmad 3559, reported as Hasan)

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ entered the mosque and saw a man praying. The man supplicated: 'O Allah, I ask You, O Allah, the One Who is Unique and Self-Sufficient, Who was not begotten nor begat, and there is none like unto Him, forgive me my sins.' The Prophet ﷺ said: 'He has been forgiven.' He said it three times. The Prophet ﷺ then said: 'Indeed, there is a man who has not prayed for forty years, and he prays this prayer. If he were to die with this supplication, he would enter the Fire or he would enter Paradise (on account of it).' Another narration states that a man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: 'I am unable to remember the Qur'an, and the Jews claim that we have no prayer, so what do you order us to do?' He said: 'Say: O Allah, I ask You for the firmness of guidance, and I ask You for the strength of conviction, and I ask You for the piety that makes me independent of others, and I ask You for the wealth that suffices me, and I ask You for the ability to be grateful to You, and for good health, and I ask You for a pure heart, and for truthful tongue, and I ask You for the best of what You know, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of what You know, and I ask Your forgiveness for what You know.' The Prophet ﷺ then said to him: 'O servant of Allah, these are the best words for a person to ask for in this world and the Hereafter.' (Ahmad 3559). In another instance, when the Prophet ﷺ heard a man supplicating: 'O Allah, I ask You by Your mercy which encompasses all things, that You forgive me my sins.' The Prophet ﷺ said: 'You have asked Allah by His Greatest Name, by which if He is asked, He gives, and if He is called upon, He answers.' (Abu Dawud 907, Sahih). And he taught the companion the dua in the main entry: 'Allahumma inni 'abduka...' (Ahmad 3559, Ibn Majah 3834, deemed Hasan).
