Dua for Seeking Forgiveness When Offending the Prophet ﷺ

Forgiveness
Hasan HadithMusnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal 3634

O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is inevitable, and Your decision concerning me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or revealed to anyone of Your creation, or sent down in Your Book, or have preserved in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Quran the springtime of my heart, and the light of my chest, and a departure for my sadness and a remover of my anxiety.

*Allahumma inni 'abduk, wa-bn 'abdik, wa-bn amatika, nasiyati bi-yadik, madin fiyya hukkumuk, 'adlun fiyya qada'uk, as'aluka bikulli ismin huwa lak, sammayta bihi nafsak, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqik, aw anzaltahu fi kitibik, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilm-il-ghaybi 'indak, an taj'ala-l-Qur'ana rabi'a qalbi, wa-nura sadri, wa-jila'a huzni, wa-dhahaba hammi*

When to Read

This is a general supplication taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ for dealing with worry and sadness, but its profound essence of seeking refuge in Allah through His Book and His Names makes it profoundly relevant when one feels they may have inadvertently fallen short in honoring the Prophet ﷺ or in their adherence to his teachings. It's a way to reconnect with the core of our faith and seek Allah's mercy, which encompasses all shortcomings.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and full conviction. Imagine your heart opening to the guidance and mercy of the Quran. Reflect on the beautiful names and attributes of Allah as you invoke them. Raise your hands in supplication as was the practice of the Prophet ﷺ for such prayers. It is best to recite it after any obligatory prayer or during the night.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is incredibly comprehensive. It affirms Tawhid (Oneness of Allah) by acknowledging His absolute dominion and justice. It's a powerful way to seek relief from distress, anxiety, and sadness, not through worldly means, but by turning to the ultimate source of peace: the Quran and Allah's perfect names. It reinforces the believer's reliance on Allah in all matters.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'No person suffers any anxiety or grief, and then says: 'O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is inevitable, and Your decision concerning me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or revealed to anyone of Your creation, or sent down in Your Book, or have preserved in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Quran the springtime of my heart, and the light of my chest, and a departure for my sadness and a remover of my anxiety,' – except that Allah will remove his anxiety and grief and replace it with joy.'
