Dua & Sunnah

Dua for Forgiveness of Sins, Whether Known or Unknown, Secret or Public

Forgiveness
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 925

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the demise of Your blessings, the reversal of Your well-being, the suddenness of Your punishment, and all that displeasures You. And I seek refuge in You from the evil deeds, desires, and corrupt inclinations.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawaali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa faj'ati niqmatik, wa jamee'i sakhatik, wa a'udhu bika min munkaratil akhlaaqi wal a'maali wal ahwaa'

When to Read

This is a comprehensive dua that can be recited at any time, especially during times of reflection, after committing a sin, or when feeling vulnerable to temptation. It's particularly relevant when you feel you've erred, whether your actions were known to others or done in private.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and humility, recognizing your dependence on Allah. Raise your hands as you do so, which is a Sunnah in supplication. Focus on the meaning of the words and the deep need for Allah's protection and mercy. It can be recited individually or as part of your daily remembrance (dhikr).

Virtues & Benefits

This dua offers a profound shield against the loss of Allah's favors, the affliction of illness or hardship, and the sudden onset of divine punishment. More importantly, it specifically seeks protection from 'evil deeds, desires, and corrupt inclinations' which encompass all forms of sin, whether they are performed openly or in secret. By seeking refuge in Allah from these, we are actively asking Him to guard our actions, thoughts, and intentions, thereby preventing sins before they even occur or covering them with forgiveness if they do. It fosters a constant awareness of Allah and a desire to please Him in all circumstances.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to teach them to invoke Allah during this specific supplication in these words: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawaali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa faj'ati niqmatik, wa jamee'i sakhatik, wa a'udhu bika min munkaratil akhlaaqi wal a'maali wal ahwaa'. (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the demise of Your blessings, the reversal of Your well-being, the suddenness of Your punishment, and all that displeases You. And I seek refuge in You from the evil deeds, desires, and corrupt inclinations.)
