Dua for Forgiveness of Sins of the Heart

Forgiveness
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 93

O Allah, forgive me all my sins, the minor and the major, the first and the last, the apparent and the hidden.

Allahumma-ghfirli dhanbi kullahu, diqqahu wa jillahu, awwalahu wa akhirahu, 'alaniyatahu wa sirrahu

When to Read

This comprehensive supplication can be recited at any time, but it is particularly potent during the blessed times for making dua, such as in the last third of the night, between the Adhan and Iqamah, after the obligatory prayers, or when experiencing a moment of deep reflection and sincerity. Making it a regular part of your supplications, perhaps after your daily prayers, can help keep the heart vigilant and seeking Allah's continuous forgiveness for all its inclinations and actions.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity, focusing on the meaning and seeking Allah's mercy. It's recommended to raise your hands, as is customary when making dua, and to face the Qiblah if possible. Begin with praising Allah and sending salutations upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Then, make this specific dua, acknowledging that all sins, whether small or large, public or private, are known to Allah and require His forgiveness. Conclude by praising Allah again and sending more salutations upon the Prophet ﷺ.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a powerful tool for seeking comprehensive forgiveness. By asking for forgiveness of *all* sins, both major and minor, the first and the last, and the apparent and the hidden, we encompass the totality of our shortcomings. This reflects a deep understanding of our constant need for Allah's mercy. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself taught this dua, demonstrating its importance. Sins, especially those of the heart like arrogance, envy, or ill-will, can fester and lead to greater transgressions. Seeking forgiveness for them purifies the heart, bringing us closer to Allah and fostering inner peace. It reminds us that true repentance involves acknowledging every aspect of our wrongdoing, seen and unseen.
