Dua for Forgiveness and a Soft Heart

Forgiveness
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 5980

O Allah, I ask You for the ability to do good deeds, and to abstain from evil deeds, and to love the poor, and that You forgive me and have mercy on me. And if You intend to try Your creation, then take me to Yourself without putting me through trials. I ask You for Your love, and the love of those who love You, and the love of deeds which bring me closer to Your love.

Allahumma inni as'aluka fi'l al-khayrat, wa tark al-munkarat, wa hubb al-masakin, wa an taghfira li wa tarhamani, wa idha aradta fi khalqika fitnatan fa tawaffani ghayra maftun. As'aluka hubbaka, wa hubba man yuhibbuka, wa hubba 'amalin yuqarribuni ila hubbik.

When to Read

This is a comprehensive dua that can be recited at any time, especially after obligatory prayers. It's particularly potent when seeking Allah's help to overcome spiritual hardness that might arise from unrepented sins. You can make it a part of your daily supplications or recite it when you feel your heart becoming distant from Allah or your worship feeling dry.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and full presence of heart. Understand that you are asking the Creator of the heavens and earth for guidance, mercy, and a heart that is alive and receptive to His love and obedience. Raise your hands if possible, as this is a Sunnah when making dua. Ensure your intention is pure and focused on seeking Allah's pleasure and closeness.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua directly addresses the root of spiritual hardness: a lack of connection with good deeds and a distance from Allah's love. By asking for the ability to do good, abstain from evil, and love the needy, you are requesting a lifestyle that naturally softens the heart. Seeking forgiveness and mercy is paramount. The latter part of the dua, asking for Allah's love and the love of those who love Him, is crucial because love for Allah is the ultimate driver for all good actions and a shield against sin. It also protects against trials by asking to be taken before falling into them, signifying a desire for a righteous end.

Narrated Abdullah bin Dinar: I heard Ibn Umar saying: Allah's Messenger ﷺ used to invoke the following invocation: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka fi'l al-khayrat, wa tark al-munkarat, wa hubb al-masakin, wa an taghfira li wa tarhamani, wa idha aradta fi khalqika fitnatan fa tawaffani ghayra maftun. As'aluka hubbaka, wa hubba man yuhibbuka, wa hubba 'amalin yuqarribuni ila hubbik.' (O Allah, I ask You for the ability to do good deeds, and to abstain from evil deeds, and to love the poor, and that You forgive me and have mercy on me. And if You intend to try Your creation, then take me to Yourself without putting me through trials. I ask You for Your love, and the love of those who love You, and the love of deeds which bring me closer to Your love.)
