Dua for Forgiveness After Renewed Sins

Forgiveness
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2739

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the demise of Your blessings, the change of Your protection, the suddenness of Your vengeance, and all of Your displeasure.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa fu'jati niqmatik, wa jami'i sukhitik.

When to Read

This powerful supplication is particularly relevant when one feels they have fallen back into sin after sincerely repenting. It's a recognition that even after a 'fresh start', the risk of returning to old habits or committing new transgressions is real. Recite it in moments of reflection, especially after realizing you've backslid, to seek Allah's protection from the consequences of renewed disobedience and to reaffirm your commitment to His path.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a humble heart. Raise your hands in supplication as you did when you initially repented. Visualize Allah's immense power and mercy. Understand that seeking refuge in Him is an act of trust and reliance. Make a renewed intention to strive against your desires and seek His help in staying firm.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encompasses seeking protection from major spiritual and worldly afflictions. By asking refuge from the 'demise of blessings' and 'change of protection', you are essentially asking Allah to maintain His favor upon you, which includes the blessing of being guided and the protection of His mercy. Falling back into sin after repentance can be seen as a potential cause for such negative changes. This supplication helps to shield you from the consequences of your actions and the anger of Allah, fostering a deeper reliance on Him for steadfastness.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to seek refuge in Allah from four things, saying: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa fu'jati niqmatik, wa jami'i sukhitik.' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the demise of Your blessings, the change of Your protection, the suddenness of Your vengeance, and all of Your displeasure.) This hadith is found in Sahih Muslim, Book 4, Hadith 2739. The context here is that the Prophet ﷺ would seek refuge in Allah from these specific calamities. When we backslide, we risk losing the blessings of guidance, the protection that keeps us firm, and incurring Allah's displeasure. Therefore, this dua is a comprehensive shield.
