Seeking Refuge in Allah from His Unforeseen Decrees

Fear
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2739

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the disappearance of Your blessings, the change of Your protection, the suddenness of Your vengeance, and all that incurs Your displeasure.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa fujati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik.

When to Read

This is a comprehensive supplication that can be made at any time, especially during the morning and evening remembrance (adhkar). It's particularly poignant when one feels a sense of unease about the future or recognizes the vastness of Allah's power and knowledge, which can sometimes lead to a feeling of awe mixed with fear regarding His unseen plans and judgments.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a humble heart. Understand the meaning of each phrase and reflect on Allah's immense power and Your own dependence on Him. It's best recited in Arabic as taught by the Prophet ﷺ. Raising your hands during the dua is also part of the Sunnah when making such supplications.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encompasses seeking protection from several profound evils: the loss of divine favor and well-being, the reversal of good health and safety, and the abruptness of divine punishment. By seeking refuge in Allah from these, one is essentially asking for sustained protection and contentment, acknowledging that His plans and judgments are beyond our full comprehension and can manifest in ways we might not anticipate. It cultivates humility and reliance on Allah, guarding against arrogance and overconfidence.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say: "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the disappearance of Your blessings, the change of Your protection, the suddenness of Your vengeance, and all that incurs Your displeasure." (Sahih Muslim 2739). The context here is the Prophet's ﷺ own practice of seeking refuge from potential calamities and Allah's displeasure, demonstrating the importance of this dua for all believers.
