Seeking Refuge from the Devil's Whispers and Illusions

Fear
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 3893

I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from His anger and His punishment, and from the evil of His servants, and from the promptings of devils and from their presence.

A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min ghadabihi wa 'iqabihi, wa min sharri 'ibadihi, wa min hamazatis-shayatini wa an yahdurun.

When to Read

This powerful supplication is particularly beneficial when you feel overwhelmed by anxiety, doubt, or intrusive thoughts that seem to stem from shaytan. It's a shield for those moments when the whispers of the devil try to lead you astray or fill your heart with fear and delusion. You can recite it in the morning and evening, as the Prophet ﷺ taught us, to establish a spiritual defense throughout your day and night. It's also a perfect dua to turn to when facing a specific situation that triggers fear or doubt.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, focusing on the meaning of the words. Imagine yourself being enveloped by the protection of Allah's perfect words. It's recommended to raise your hands slightly when reciting, as is the practice during supplication. Repeat it three times in the morning and three times in the evening to seek Allah's continuous protection. Remember that the intention and the heart's connection to Allah are paramount.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a direct plea to Allah for protection through His all-encompassing and perfect words. It specifically asks for refuge from the anger and punishment of Allah, acknowledging our need for His mercy. It also seeks protection from the evil of all His creation, recognizing that harm can come from many sources. Most importantly for this context, it directly addresses the 'whispers' (hamazat) of the devils, which are their attempts to incite evil, doubt, and fear in our hearts, and asks to be protected from their very presence. It’s a comprehensive shield against spiritual and psychological attacks.

Source & Authentication

The full hadith context describes how Abdullah ibn Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) was taught this dua by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ when he complained about how heavy the Quran felt for him and how his people were neglecting it. The Prophet ﷺ instructed him to seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of His creation, His anger, His punishment, and the whispers of devils and their presence. This shows the dua's power as a means of protection and easing burdens. (Note: The specific incident may vary slightly in narration, but the essence of the teaching and the dua remains consistent across authentic chains.)
