Seeking Allah's Refuge from Sudden Death and an Ill End

Fear
Sahih HadithSunan Abi Dawud 1552

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from being crushed by a falling building, from drowning, from burning, from extreme old age. And I seek refuge in You from being overcome by Satan at the time of death. And I seek refuge in You from dying in Your cause while turning my back. And I seek refuge in You from dying from a venomous bite.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min taraddiyil-hadmi, wal-gharaqi, wal-hariqi, wal-harami. Wa a'udhu bika an yatakhabbatani sh-shaytanu 'indal-mawt. Wa a'udhu bika an amuta fi sabilika mudbiran, wa a'udhu bika an amuta ladighan.

When to Read

This is a comprehensive supplication that a Muslim should make regularly, particularly in the morning and evening. It addresses significant fears related to a sudden, painful, or ill end. Making it a habit helps foster a constant state of remembrance and reliance on Allah, seeking His protection in all circumstances.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and a heartfelt feeling of dependence on Allah. Face the Qiblah if possible, and ensure you are in a state of purity. Raise your hands as you normally would for supplication. Reflect on the meanings of each phrase, visualizing Allah's protection shielding you from these calamities.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is powerful because it encapsulates seeking refuge from several terrifying ways of dying, many of which can be sudden and unexpected, such as accidents (crushing, drowning, burning) or the debilitating effects of old age that leave one vulnerable. Crucially, it also seeks protection from spiritual harm at the most critical moment – the time of death – by asking Allah to prevent Satan from misleading or troubling us. Furthermore, it asks for a dignified end, seeking refuge from dying while retreating from a righteous path or from a painful death like that of a venomous bite. By reciting this, we are actively seeking Allah's grace for a peaceful, protected passage from this world to the next.

Source & Authentication

The narration states: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to say: 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the ruin, from being crushed, from drowning, from burning, and from extreme old age. I seek refuge in You from being overcome by Satan at the time of death. I seek refuge in You from dying in Your cause while turning my back. I seek refuge in You from dying from a venomous bite.'
