Dua for Strength When Facing the Fear of the Unknown in Battle

Fear
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 1736

اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّا نَجْعَلُكَ فِي نُحُورِهِمْ وَنَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شُرُورِهِمْ

O Allah, we place You before them and seek refuge in You from their evil.

Allahumma inna naj'aluka fi nuhurihim wa na'udhu bika min shururihim

When to Read

This powerful dua is recited when facing an enemy, particularly when the outcome is uncertain and fear begins to creep in. It's meant to be uttered at the moment of confrontation, whether in actual battle or when facing any overwhelming challenge where the 'unknown' feels like a formidable foe. Imagine standing on the battlefield, the dust rising, the sounds of anticipation all around – this is the precise moment to turn your heart to Allah.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, directing your heart and your words towards Allah. It is often said while facing the enemy, as the words themselves invoke Allah's protection 'before them' and seek refuge 'from their evil'. Let the weight of the situation fuel your reliance on the Almighty. Feel the strength that comes from knowing you are not alone, but are actively seeking Allah's direct intervention.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a direct supplication taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ for times of intense confrontation and fear. It embodies complete reliance on Allah (Tawakkul), acknowledging that ultimate strength and protection come from Him alone. By saying 'Allahumma inna naj'aluka fi nuhurihim' (O Allah, we place You before them), we are essentially declaring that Allah is our primary focus and defense, more powerful than any enemy. The second part, 'wa na'udhu bika min shururihim' (and we seek refuge in You from their evil), clearly states our dependence on Allah for safety from any harm the adversary might bring. It's a declaration of faith that empowers the believer, transforming fear into steadfastness.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Abu 'Abdullah, the freed slave of Al-Hasan bin 'Ali, that Al-Hasan bin 'Ali and 'Abdullah bin 'Amr bin Al-'As said to 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud: 'We are afraid that our tongues will become dry from the remembrance of Allah.' So Ibn Mas'ud said: 'How could that be?' They said: 'We are afraid that we will not remember Allah as He deserves.' So Ibn Mas'ud said: 'This is not what I feared for you. What I feared for you is that you might be put into the position of 'Abdullah bin Ubayy bin Salul, who when they were marching with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he said: 'Allah and His Messenger spoke the truth.' So when the Prophet ﷺ met the polytheists, he said: 'Allahumma inna naj'aluka fi nuhurihim wa na'udhu bika min shururihim.' (O Allah, we place You before them and seek refuge in You from their evil). And he said: 'Allahumma 'ajribna bi 'aynika allati la tanamu wa khfadhna bikana fika'ana alladhi la yuram wa ansurna 'ala 'aduwwina' (O Allah, let our eyes watch over us who do not sleep, and grant us protection by the protection that cannot be attained, and give us victory over our enemy).'
