Dua for Protection from the Fear of Misjudgment by Scholars

Fear
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2710

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the disappearance of Your blessings, and the change of Your protection, and the suddenness of Your punishment, and all of Your displeasure. And I seek refuge in You from the trials of speech, and the trials of action, and the trials of knowledge, and the trials of wealth, and the trials of poverty, and the trials of women, and the trial of the Dajjal, and the trial of the grave, and the trials of this world, and the trials of the Hereafter.

When to Read

This comprehensive dua is excellent to recite in the morning and evening, as it covers a vast array of fears and trials we might face. Specifically, when the fear of being misjudged by those with knowledge (scholars or learned individuals) weighs on your heart, this dua is particularly relevant, asking Allah to protect us from the 'trials of knowledge' (فتنة العلم - fitnatil 'ilm) which can encompass misunderstanding religious texts, misinterpreting rulings, or even becoming arrogant due to one's own learning, leading to the misjudgment of others or being misjudged.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, raising your hands as is customary for seeking refuge with Allah. Understand that seeking refuge (isti'adhah) is a profound act of reliance on Allah (tawakkul). Contemplate the meaning of each phrase, acknowledging Allah's power to protect you from all forms of harm, including the subtle but potent fear of misjudgment, especially from those who hold religious authority. It is also beneficial to seek understanding of the 'trials of knowledge' so that we may actively guard against them in our own actions and statements.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua offers comprehensive protection by seeking refuge in Allah from numerous dangers, both spiritual and worldly. By specifically asking protection from 'fitnatil 'ilm' (the trial of knowledge), we are asking Allah to safeguard us from the arrogance, misinterpretations, and negative consequences that can arise from seeking or possessing knowledge. This includes the fear of misjudging others and the fear of being misjudged by those who are learned, ensuring our intentions remain pure and our actions are guided by truth, not by the desire for approval or the fear of criticism.
