Dua for Protection from the Fear of Becoming an Oppressor

Fear
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 922

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the cessation of Your blessings, the reversal of Your well-being, the suddenness of Your vengeance, and all that displeasures You. And I seek refuge in You from becoming arrogant and oppressive towards anyone.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatika, wa faja'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik, wa a'udhu bika an atajabbara 'ala ahad.

When to Read

This is a profound dua that can be recited at any time, especially during your daily supplications (duas). It's particularly beneficial to invoke when you feel a sense of power or authority, or when reflecting on the potential pitfalls of leadership or influence, to safeguard your heart and actions from arrogance and injustice.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, reflecting on each part of the supplication. Raise your hands as you would for other duas, and direct your heart and attention towards Allah. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized the importance of seeking refuge in Allah from various evils, and this dua encapsulates a critical aspect of spiritual protection.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a powerful shield against succumbing to arrogance and oppression. By seeking refuge in Allah, we acknowledge our weakness and dependence on Him for maintaining both His blessings and our own moral compass. It fosters humility and a constant awareness that true power and authority belong to Allah alone. The Prophet's (peace be upon him) own practice of such comprehensive seeking of refuge highlights its immense importance for spiritual well-being and safeguarding against negative character traits that can lead to great sin and loss, both in this life and the next. It reminds us to always be mindful of the rights of others and to treat everyone with kindness and justice.

Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to say, when he performed the morning prayer: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman nafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan.' (O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, goodly provision, and acceptable deeds.) And when he performed the afternoon prayer, he would say the like of that and: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min al-juhdi wa-d-damani, wa su'i al-mashi, wa ahwati al-asqaam, wa a'udhu bika min an atajabbara 'ala ahad.' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from destitution, from distress, from torment, from all the ills and wicked diseases. And I seek refuge in You from becoming arrogant towards anyone.) Another narration: '...and from the suddenness of Your vengeance, and from all Your displeasure. And I seek refuge in You from the removal of Your favor, and from the sudden change of Your protection, and from Your wrath, and from all Your displeasure.'
