Dua for Protection from Losing Patience and Anger

Fear
Hasan HadithSunan At-Tirmidhi 2634

O Allah, I ask You for steadfastness in all matters, and determination in righteousness. I ask You for the things that bring about Your mercy and the means of Your forgiveness. I ask You for the means to be grateful for Your favours and to worship You well. I ask You for a sound heart and a truthful tongue. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what You know, and I ask You for the good of what You know. I seek Your forgiveness for what You know. Indeed, You are the Knower of all unseen matters.

Allahumma inni as'alukath-thabata fil-amr, wal-'azeemata 'alar-rushd, wa as'aluka muujibaati rahmatik, wa hawaazima maghfiratik, wa as'aluka shukra ni'matik, wa husna 'ibaadatik, wa as'aluka qalban saleeman, wa lisaanan saadiqan, wa a'udhu bika min sharri ma ta'lam, wa as'aluka min khairi ma ta'lam, wa astaghfiruka mimma ta'lam, innaka anta 'allamul-ghuyub.

When to Read

This powerful dua is comprehensive and encompasses requests for stability, guidance, mercy, forgiveness, gratitude, good worship, a pure heart, and a truthful tongue. Recite it regularly, especially when you feel your resolve weakening or when facing situations that might test your patience and lead to anger. It's a proactive supplication to cultivate inner strength and divine support.

How to Read

Raise your hands in supplication, facing the Qiblah if possible. Begin by praising Allah and sending blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Recite the dua with sincerity and conviction, reflecting on its meaning. Conclude by making personal supplications for yourself and others.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), asks for immense blessings. It covers essential aspects of a believer's life: steadfastness in faith and action, the resolve to stay on the right path, the means to attain Allah's mercy and forgiveness, the ability to show gratitude, and the capacity to worship Allah perfectly. Crucially, it seeks protection from the hidden evils we might not be aware of, and asks for the good that Allah knows is best for us. By asking for a sound heart and truthful tongue, it directly addresses the root of many interpersonal conflicts, including those fueled by anger and impatience.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated that Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I said to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him): 'Teach me something I can say in my supplication.' He said: 'O Abu Bakr, say: Allahumma inni zalamtu nafsi zulman kathiran, wa la yaghfirudh-dhunuba illa anta, faghfir li maghfiratan min 'indika, warhamni innaka antal-Ghafurur-Rahim. (O Allah, I have wronged myself with much wrongdoing, and none can forgive sins except You. So, forgive me with forgiveness from You, and have mercy upon me. Indeed, You are the Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful).' Then he said: 'And say: Allahumma inni as'alukal-thabata fil-amr, wal-'azeemata 'alar-rushd, wa as'aluka muujibaati rahmatik, wa hawaazima maghfiratik, wa as'aluka shukra ni'matik, wa husna 'ibaadatik, wa as'aluka qalbansaleeman, wa lisaanan saadiqan, wa a'udhu bika min sharri ma ta'lam, wa as'aluka min khairi ma ta'lam, wa astaghfiruka mimma ta'lam, innaka anta 'allamul-ghuyub. (O Allah, I ask You for steadfastness in all matters, and determination in righteousness. Indeed, You are the Knower of all unseen matters).' - Sunan At-Tirmidhi 3505 (The first part of the hadith has a different numbering, but the second part, which contains the dua, is 2634)
