Dua for Protection from Deception by Apparent Goodness

Fear
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 707a

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا عَمِلْتُ وَمِنْ شَرِّ مَا لَمْ أَعْمَلْ

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done and the evil of what I have not done.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min sharri ma 'amiltu wa min sharri ma lam a'mal

When to Read

This comprehensive dua can be recited at any time, but it is particularly beneficial during times of uncertainty, when facing difficult decisions, or when feeling overwhelmed by the world's complexities. It's a profound expression of reliance on Allah for guidance and protection against both our own shortcomings and the potential harms we might overlook or inadvertently cause. Consider making it a regular part of your morning or evening supplications, or recite it before embarking on a new venture.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and deep reflection. Raise your hands if possible, as is the etiquette for supplication, and face the Qiblah if you are able. Focus on the meaning of seeking Allah's refuge from the consequences of your actions, both those you've committed and those you haven't yet, acknowledging your human fallibility. Understand that 'what I have not done' can encompass sins you haven't committed but might have considered, or good deeds you failed to perform, and importantly, the potential harm or deception that lies hidden even in things that appear good.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a powerful shield against the subtle deceptions of this world and our own nafs (self). By seeking refuge from the 'evil of what I have done,' we acknowledge our sins and ask for protection from their negative consequences. By seeking refuge from the 'evil of what I have not done,' we seek protection from potential future wrongdoings, missed opportunities for good, and importantly, from being misled by things that appear beneficial but are, in reality, harmful. This encompasses being deceived by apparent goodness, where something might seem righteous or advantageous on the surface but carries hidden corruption or leads to spiritual detriment. It instills humility and a constant awareness of our dependence on Allah's grace and protection.
