Dua for Protection Against the Love of Worldly Possessions

Fear
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2739

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the demolition of Your blessings, and the changing of Your well-being, and the suddenness of Your punishment, and all of Your displeasure. And I seek refuge in You from the hardship of affliction, and the attainment of wretchedness, and the evil of decree, and the rejoicing of the enemies.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa faja'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik. Wa a'udhu bika min jahdil-bala', wa darakish-shaqa', wa su'il-qada', wa shamatatil-a'da'.

When to Read

This comprehensive dua is powerful for seeking Allah's protection against various forms of hardship, including the subtle trap of becoming overly attached to worldly possessions. The 'demolition of Your blessings' can encompass losing what we have, but also the internal state where the love of possessions overshadows our gratitude and contentment. Recite this dua during times of reflection, perhaps after salah, or whenever you feel a pull towards materialism.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a focused heart. Understand that the true wealth is in Allah's favor and protection. Raise your hands slightly as you would during supplication, and utter these words with conviction, believing in Allah's power to safeguard you from all that is harmful, seen and unseen. It is a comprehensive plea for divine protection.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a treasure trove of protection. It shields us from the loss of blessings, the shift from good health to illness, sudden divine retribution, and incurring Allah's anger. More specifically to our topic, by seeking refuge from the 'demolition of Your blessings' and 'all of Your displeasure,' we are implicitly asking Allah to guide our hearts away from excessive attachment to temporary worldly goods that can lead to spiritual decay and dissatisfaction. It also protects us from the hardship of trials, falling into misery, unfortunate decrees, and the gloating of enemies, all of which can be exacerbated by an ungrateful heart distracted by possessions.

Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Whenever the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) concluded his morning prayer, he would say: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa faja'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik. Wa a'udhu bika min jahdil-bala', wa darakish-shaqa', wa su'il-qada', wa shamatatil-a'da'. (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the demolition of Your blessings, and the changing of Your well-being, and the suddenness of Your punishment, and all of Your displeasure.
