Dua for Inner Strength Against the Fear of Being Underestimated

Fear
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6306

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the cessation of Your blessings, the reversal of Your good health, the suddenness of Your punishment, and all of Your displeasure. I seek refuge in You from the trials of the grave, and I seek refuge in You from the trials of wealth, and I seek refuge in You from the trials of poverty. And I seek refuge in You from the trials of the Dajjal. O Allah, cleanse my heart with ice and cold water, and purify my heart from sins, just as You purified the white garment from dirt, and keep me far from my sins, just as You kept the East and the West far apart.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa fu'jati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik. Wa a'udhu bika min fitnatil-qabri, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatil-ghina, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatil-faqr. Wa a'udhu bika min fitnatid-Dajjal. Allahumma-ghsil qalbii bimā'ith-th alji wal-barad, wa naqqi qalbii minal-khaṭāyā kamā naqqayta ath-thawbal-abyaḍa minad-danas, wa bā'id baini wa baina khaṭāyāya kamā bā'adta bainal-mashriqi wal-maghrib.

When to Read

This profound dua, taught by our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, is for seeking Allah's protection against many trials, including those that can lead to feelings of inadequacy or fear of being underestimated. Recite it when you feel overwhelmed by external pressures, self-doubt, or the fear that others don't recognize your true worth or potential. It's particularly relevant when facing situations where your abilities might be questioned, or when you feel vulnerable to societal judgments.

How to Read

The Prophet ﷺ would recite this dua frequently, especially in his night prayers. Make it a habit to recite this supplication sincerely, with full conviction in Allah's power to protect and guide you. Raise your hands in supplication as you do for other duas, and beseech Allah with humility and earnestness. Visualize the cleansing of your heart and the distance Allah can place between you and your shortcomings.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua offers multifaceted protection. By seeking refuge in Allah from the decline of blessings and the reversal of well-being, we are shielded from external circumstances that might lead to feelings of helplessness. The plea for protection from the trials of wealth and poverty addresses vulnerabilities that can impact self-perception. Most importantly, the request to cleanse the heart from sins and distance us from them is key. A purified heart, free from the burdens of sin and doubt, builds inner resilience. This strength allows us to face the world, including the fear of being underestimated, with a sounder self-assurance rooted in our relationship with Allah, not in the opinions of others.

The narration in Sahih al-Bukhari (6306) states: The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to say: 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the cessation of Your blessings, the reversal of Your good health, the suddenness of Your punishment, and all of Your displeasure. And I seek refuge in You from the trials of the grave, and I seek refuge in You from the trials of wealth, and I seek refuge in You from the trials of poverty. And I seek refuge in You from the trials of the Dajjal. O Allah, cleanse my heart with ice and cold water, and purify my heart from sins, just as You purified the white garment from dirt, and keep me far from my sins, just as You kept the East and the West far apart.'
