Dua for Inner Peace Amidst Overwhelming Responsibilities

Fear
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2708

O Allah, indeed I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your female servant. My forelock is in Your Hand. Your command over me is inevitable. Your justice in my regard is fair. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or revealed in Your Book, or taught to any one of Your creation, or kept unto Yourself in the knowledge of the unseen which is with You, to make the Qur'an the springtime of my heart, and the light of my chest, and a banisher of my sorrow, and a reliever of my anxiety.

Allahumma inni 'abduka, ibnu 'abdika, ibnu amatik, nasiyatii biyadika, madin fiyya hukmuka, 'adlun fiyya qadaa'uka, as'aluka bikulli ismin huwa laka, sammayta bihi nafsaka, aw anzaltahu fi kitabika, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqika, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilm-il-ghaybi 'indaka, an taj'ala al-Qur'ana rabii'a qalbi, wa nuura sadri, wa jalaa'a huzni, wa dhahaaba hammi.

When to Read

This profound supplication is particularly relevant when you feel the weight of your responsibilities pressing down, making you anxious or fearful about your ability to manage them. Recite it during times of stress, when facing a new challenge, or when you simply feel overwhelmed by the demands of life. It's a powerful tool to reconnect with Allah's support and find solace in His plan.

How to Read

Begin with sincere humility, acknowledging your dependence on Allah. Place your forehead, or hand, on your forehead as a gesture of submission (naasitī biyadaik - my forelock is in Your Hand). Utter the words with full presence, reflecting on each attribute of Allah you invoke. Visualize the Qur'an becoming a source of life and light for your heart and mind, dispelling worries.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to a companion struggling with worry, directly addresses the root of anxiety by shifting focus from personal limitations to Allah's infinite power and wisdom. The Prophet ﷺ promised that reciting this dua would alleviate grief and remove worries. It transforms overwhelming fears into a source of hope by seeking strength from the divine. The emphasis on the Qur'an as a source of comfort highlights its role in bringing peace to the soul.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated that Abdullah bin Mas'ud said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "No person suffers any anxiety or grief, and then says: 'Allahumma inni 'abduka, ibnu 'abdika, ibnu amatik, nasiyatii biyadika, madin fiyya hukmuka, 'adlun fiyya qadaa'uka, as'aluka bikulli ismin huwa laka, sammayta bihi nafsaka, aw anzaltahu fi kitabika, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqika, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilm-il-ghaybi 'indaka, an taj'ala al-Qur'ana rabii'a qalbi, wa nuura sadri, wa jalaa'a huzni, wa dhahaaba hammi.' - but Allah will remove his anxiety and grief, and replace his sorrow with joy." It was said: "O Messenger of Allah, should we learn these words?" He said: "Yes, indeed! It is not permissible for anyone to say them who has not said them after the manner of sincerity in their utterance." (Sahih Muslim 2708)
