Dua for Courage When Facing a Terrifying Dream

Fear
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2708

I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from His anger and His punishment, and from the evil of His servants, and from the whispers of devils and from their presence.

A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min ghadabihi wa 'iqabihi, wa min sharri 'ibadihi, wa min hamazatish-shayateeni wa an yahdhuroon

When to Read

This powerful supplication is particularly effective when you wake up from a frightening dream, feeling anxious or scared. Recite it immediately upon waking, or even before sleeping if you are prone to nightmares, to invoke Allah's protection.

How to Read

Recite this dua sincerely, with full conviction in Allah's power to protect you. You can recite it once or multiple times, depending on your comfort level. It's best to make a physical gesture of seeking refuge, like blowing gently with a slight spittle (as mentioned in some narrations) or rubbing your hand over your chest where your heart is, symbolizing seeking solace within yourself by turning to Allah.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a comprehensive shield against all forms of evil, be it divine displeasure, the mischief of creation, or the insidious whispers of Shaytan. When facing a terrifying dream, it helps to dispel the fear by reminding us that Allah's perfect words are the ultimate protection. It transforms a moment of fear into an act of reliance on the Almighty, turning a distressing experience into an opportunity to strengthen our connection with Allah.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: If any of you sees a dream that he likes, he should know that it is from Allah, and he should praise Him and tell others about it. If he sees a dream that he dislikes, then it is from Shaytan, and he should seek refuge in Allah from its evil, and he should not tell anyone about it, and it will not harm him. (Sahih al-Bukhari 7044, Sahih Muslim 2708). In another narration from Sahih Muslim 2708, the Prophet (peace be upon him) taught: When one of you sees a dream that he dislikes, he should spit on his left side three times and seek refuge in Allah from Shaytan and from the evil of the dream (which he has seen) three times, and turn over from the side on which he was lying.
