Fear
Hasan HadithMusnad Ahmad 19606

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ أَنْ أُشْرِكَ بِكَ وَأَنَا أَعْلَمُ وَأَسْتَغْفِرُكَ لِمَا لَا أَعْلَمُ

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from associating anything with You knowingly, and I seek Your forgiveness for what I do unknowingly.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika an ushrika bika wa ana a'lam, wa astaghfiruka lima la a'lam.

When to Read

The Prophet ﷺ taught us this powerful dua when asked how to protect ourselves from shirk, which he described as 'more subtle than the creeping of an ant.' Recite this dua regularly, perhaps as part of your morning and evening adhkar, or whenever you find yourself reflecting on your intentions and actions. It's especially vital when you want to cultivate a deeper sense of Tawhid and guard against even the most hidden forms of shirk, like showing off (riya) or seeking praise from others.

How to Read

Recite this dua with a heart full of sincerity and a deep understanding of its profound meaning. Reflect on the gravity of shirk, the most severe sin, and acknowledge your human weakness and potential for error, both intentional and unintentional. When you say 'I seek refuge in You,' truly feel your dependence on Allah alone for protection. When you ask for forgiveness for the unknown, reflect on Allah's vast mercy and your need for His grace, trusting in His ability to protect you from what you don't even perceive.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua offers immense benefits: it protects you from both major shirk (associating partners with Allah explicitly) and minor shirk (like showing off), covering both known and unknown transgressions. By regularly invoking this dua, you actively cultivate a strong sense of Tawhid (the absolute Oneness of Allah) in your heart. It provides immense peace of mind, granting you courage and steadfastness against the fear of accidentally falling into shirk. It also encourages introspection, allowing you to constantly check your intentions and seek Allah's forgiveness for any hidden impurities in your worship and actions. It reinforces your complete reliance on Allah alone for guidance and protection, strengthening your faith.

Source & Authentication

Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ delivered a sermon to us one day and said: 'O people, beware of this shirk, for it is more subtle than the creeping of an ant.' A man from the people stood up and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, how can we beware of it when it is more subtle than the creeping of an ant?' He ﷺ said, 'Say: "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from associating anything with You knowingly, and I seek Your forgiveness for what I do unknowingly."'
