Seeking Allah's Protection from the Evil Eye of Competitors

Evil Eye & Hasad
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2710

In the name of Allah, I seek refuge in Allah from the evil of myself and from the evil of every moving creature, He is seizing it by its forelock. Verily my Lord is on a straight path.

Bismillahi, a'udhu billahi min sharri nafsi wa min sharri kulli dabbatin anta akhidun bi nasiyatiha, inna rabbi 'ala siratin mustaqim.

When to Read

This powerful dua is recited when you feel envious glances or suspect the evil eye from competitors in business, studies, or any endeavor where success can unfortunately draw negative attention. Recite it before entering into competitive situations, when you hear of someone's envy, or whenever you feel a sense of unease related to others' ill wishes towards your achievements.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and firm conviction in Allah's protection. Begin with 'Bismillah' (In the name of Allah), acknowledging His power over all things. Understand that 'sharri nafsi' refers to the evil within oneself that might attract negativity, and 'sharri kulli dabbatin' encompasses all creatures and circumstances that could pose harm, including the evil eye cast by envious competitors. The phrase 'anta akhidun bi nasiyatiha' emphasizes Allah's absolute control, and 'inna Rabbi 'ala siratin mustaqim' reaffirms trust in His just guidance. It's recommended to recite this three times in the morning and evening for comprehensive protection, as taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua offers comprehensive protection by invoking Allah's name and seeking refuge in His might. It acknowledges Allah's absolute control over all creation, including those who might envy or wish harm. By reciting it, a believer actively shields themselves from the potential negative impact of the evil eye, jealousy, and ill intentions, especially in competitive environments where such feelings can be heightened. It fosters a sense of reliance on Allah and strengthens the connection with Him as the ultimate protector.

Yahya related to me from Malik, from Ibn Shihab, from Humayd ibn 'Abdur-Rahman al-Himyari, from Abu Hurayrah that Abu'l-Hasan 'Ali ibn Talib (Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, 'There is no one who is afflicted with the evil eye, but if there were a person to say: By the perfection of Allah and His great wisdom, I ask Allah, the Great, the Lord of the Great Throne, to protect you from what Allah has decreed, he would be protected from it.' He said: 'And Jibril (peace be upon him) came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said: "Muhammad, you have been afflicted with the evil eye." Allah, the Exalted, revealed to you: "And verily, those who disbelieve would almost make you slip with their eyes when they hear the Reminder and they say: 'He is indeed mad.'" (Al-Qalam, 67). So Jibril (peace be upon him) said: 'Recite: "I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created."' (A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq). Yahya said: Malik said: 'The people were instructed to recite these words as a protection against the evil eye.'
