In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Say: 'I seek refuge in the Lord of the daybreak, From the evil of what He has created, And from the evil of the darkening night as it falls, And from the evil of those who practice witchcraft when they blow on knots, And from the evil of the envious when he envies.' In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Say: 'I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind, The King of mankind, The God of mankind, From the evil of the whisperer who withdraws, Who whispers in the breasts of mankind, From among the jinn and mankind.'

Bismil-lahir-Rahmanir-Rahim. Qul a'udhu bi Rabbil-falaq. Min sharri ma khalaq. Wa min sharri ghasiqin idha waqab. Wa min sharrin-naffathati fil-'uqad. Wa min sharri hasidin idha hasad. Bismil-lahir-Rahmanir-Rahim. Qul a'udhu bi Rabbin-nas. Malikin-nas. Ilahin-nas. Min sharril-waswasil-khannas. Alladhi yuwaswisu fi sudurin-nas. Minal-jinnati wan-nas.

When to Read

These powerful Surahs, Al-Falaq and An-Nas, are essential for seeking Allah's protection against all forms of evil, including the envious glances that can stem from materialistic displays. They should be recited regularly, especially after the obligatory prayers, before sleeping, and whenever one feels exposed to envy or the ill effects of others' showy possessions.

How to Read

Recite Surah Al-Falaq (Chapter 113) and Surah An-Nas (Chapter 114) with sincerity and firm belief in Allah's power to protect. Focus on the meaning of the verses, acknowledging that ultimate refuge is found only with Him. It is recommended to blow gently onto your hands after reciting, then wipe them over your body, starting with the head and face, and repeating this three times. This practice is derived from the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting these two Surahs is a comprehensive act of seeking refuge with Allah from all visible and invisible evils. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that reciting them is one of the best ways to protect oneself and one's family from the evil eye and envy. Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that when the Prophet ﷺ was ill, he would recite Al-Mu'awwidhatayn (Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas) and then blow on his hands and rub his body with them. She also mentioned that he used to recite them every night before sleeping.

Source & Authentication

‘Aishah (May Allah be pleased with her) reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to recite the Mu'awwadhat (Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas) and then blow on his hands and rub his hands over his body. When he felt severe pain, I used to recite them and rub his hands over his body with my hands, seeking its blessing (Barakah). — Sahih al-Bukhari 5016
