Daily Evening Routine
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 2697

In the name of Allah. I seek refuge by the Most Generous Face of Allah from being overtaken by misery, or by something worse. In the name of Allah, and by Allah. Whatever Allah wills, there is no power except with Allah. I have placed my trust in Allah. Allah is sufficient for me. I have reached the morning upon the primordial nature of Islam, the word of sincerity, and the religion of our Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and the creed of our father Ibrahim, who was inclined towards truth and was a Muslim. And I am not of those who associate partners with Allah.

Bismillah, a'udhu biwajhikal-karim, an ta'khudhani asraaqun, aw bi akthara min dhalik. Tawakkaltu 'alallah, hasbiyallah. Asbahtu 'ala fitratil-Islami wa kalimatil-ikhlas, wa 'ala dini nabiyyina Muhammadin sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, wa 'ala millati abina Ibrahim hanifan musliman wa ma ana minal-mushrikin.

When to Read

This powerful supplication is recommended to be recited before going to sleep. It encapsulates a holistic seeking of protection and acknowledgment of Allah's sovereignty as one transitions into the state of rest, where one is most vulnerable. Reciting it as part of your evening routine ensures you are consciously entrusting your well-being to Allah before sleep.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a focused heart, contemplating the meaning of each phrase. It is best recited just before you lie down to sleep, after completing your evening prayers and other remembrances of Allah. Ensure your intention is pure – seeking Allah's protection and acknowledging His blessings.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua offers profound benefits. It seeks Allah's protection from all forms of misfortune, distress, and evil, especially during the vulnerable state of sleep. It affirms Tawhid (Oneness of Allah) and reliance upon Him (Tawakkul). By aligning oneself with the pure monotheistic faith of Ibrahim (peace be upon him) and Islam, it reinforces one's commitment to the deen and seeks to ward off Shirk (associating partners with Allah).

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught this supplication to his companions. It is a comprehensive request for protection and affirmation of faith before sleep. When one of you goes to his bed, he should recite: 'Bismillah, a'udhu biwajhikal-karim, an ta'khudhani asraaqun, aw bi akthara min dhalik. Tawakkaltu 'alallah, hasbiyallah. Asbahtu 'ala fitratil-Islami wa kalimatil-ikhlas, wa 'ala dini nabiyyina Muhammadin sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, wa 'ala millati abina Ibrahim hanifan musliman wa ma ana minal-mushrikin.' (Recited when waking up, but the protection is sought before sleep).
