Seeking Allah's Counsel in Sleep: Dua for Guidance in Dreams

Daily Evening Routine
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 5077

O Allah, I ask You for knowledge of the unseen and the ability to do whatever is decreed. I ask You for contentment after the decree, and a pleasant life after death. O Allah, I ask You for Your guidance and Your rightness. I seek refuge in You from the evil of my soul and from the evil of every creature You are seizing by its forelock. Indeed, my Lord is on a straight path.

Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilm al-ghaybi, wa qudratan 'ala al-maqdoori, wa as'aluka ar-rida ba'da al-qadaa'i, wa barda al-'ayshi ba'da al-mawt, Allahumma inni as'aluka hudaka wa sadaadaka, wa a'udhu bika min sharri nafsi, wa min sharri kulli dabbatin anta aakhidhun binasiyatiha, inna Rabbi 'ala siratin mustaqeem.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication is a profound expression of Tawakkul (reliance on Allah). By asking for knowledge of the unseen and the ability to accept His decree, we acknowledge His supreme knowledge and power. Seeking refuge from the evil of our souls and all creatures demonstrates our understanding of human fallibility and the need for divine protection. This dua can lead to inner peace and clarity, as it aligns our will with Allah's, making us more receptive to His guidance, even through the seemingly random experiences of sleep.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Abdullah bin Ja'far that he heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saying: (This hadith has a chain of narration that is Hasan, meaning it is sound and reliable, though perhaps not as rigorously verified as Sahih hadith. It was narrated by Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah.)
