Daily Evening Routine
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 3918

In the name of Allah. O Allah, I ask You for the goodness of this night and the goodness of what follows it, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of this night and the evil of what follows it. O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, good provision, and accepted deeds.

*Bismillah, Allahumma inni as'aluka khayra hadhihil-laylati, wa khayra ma ba'daha, wa a'udhu bika min sharri hadhihil-layli, wa sharri ma ba'daha. Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman nafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan.*

When to Read

This dua is recommended to be recited when entering the evening, as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to seek Allah's protection and blessings at the transition from day to night. It's a beautiful way to acknowledge the passing of the day and prepare for the night with a heart full of reliance on Allah.

How to Read

Recite this dua sincerely, with presence of heart. Focus on the meaning of each phrase as you utter it. Begin with 'Bismillah' (In the name of Allah) as you commence any action or supplication. It's best recited after sunset, as you settle down for the evening.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua encompasses seeking the best of the night and what comes after it, while also warding off its potential evils. It demonstrates our dependence on Allah for both worldly well-being (good provision) and spiritual growth (beneficial knowledge, accepted deeds). By asking for accepted deeds, we acknowledge that all our efforts are only valuable if accepted by Allah. This practice fosters a sense of constant remembrance and reliance (dhikrullah) and aligns our daily activities with Allah's pleasure.

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, "When it is the evening, do not wait for the morning to come. (Do not postpone your actions till then). And when it is morning, do not wait for the evening to come. (Do not postpone actions till then). Seize the opportunity of your health and before your illness, and of your life before your death, and of your youth before your old age. And O people of God, seize the opportunity of your wealth before your poverty. And of your time of gathering before your time of dispersal." And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say, when the evening came: "Bismillah, Allahumma inni as'aluka khayra hadhihil-laylati, wa khayra ma ba'daha, wa a'udhu bika min sharri hadhihil-layli, wa sharri ma ba'daha. Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman nafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan." And when morning came, he used to say: "Bismillah, Allahumma inni as'aluka rizqan tayyiban, wa 'ilman nafi'an, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan." (Sahih Muslim 3918)
