When to Read
This dua is recited immediately upon waking up, whether it's for suhoor, Fajr prayer, or any other reason during the night. It's a beautiful way to acknowledge Allah's power over life and death as you transition from sleep to wakefulness, especially when preparing for the blessed meal of suhoor.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and presence of mind as soon as you become conscious after waking. Feel the gratitude for being granted another chance to live and worship. It's often said before getting out of bed.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua is a powerful affirmation of Tawhid (Oneness of Allah) and gratitude. It reminds us that our life is a trust from Allah, and only He has the power to give and take life. Waking up specifically for suhoor is a Sunnah, and making dua upon waking adds a spiritual dimension to this blessed act. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ encouraged waking up for suhoor, stating: 'Take suhoor, for in suhoor is a blessing.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 1923).

Narrated Hudhaifa: Whenever the Prophet (ﷺ) got up for night prayer, he would start with,"Allah is the Greatest. O Allah, Lord of Gabriel, Michael, Israfil, and the Creator of the heavens and the earth, Knower of the unseen and that which is apparent, You are the Arbiter between Your servants in that wherein they differed. Guide me to the truth in that wherein we differed by Your permission. Verily, You are the Guide to the straight path." He would say: "O Allah, guide me to the best of deeds and the best of manners, for none can guide to the best of them except You. And protect me from the evil of bad manners and bad deeds and evil inclinations and evil desires and evil plots and evil thoughts and evil eyes." He used to seek refuge in Allah from the evil of this world and the evil of the Hereafter. When he woke up from sleep, he would say: "Praise be to Allah Who has given us life after death, and to Him is the return." (Sahih Muslim 770 is a similar narration focusing on waking up). Another narration from Sahih al-Bukhari 6312: The Prophet (ﷺ) used to say when waking up: 'Alhamdulillah-illadhi ahyaanaa ba'da ma amaatanaa wa ilaihin-nushoor.' (Praise be to Allah Who revived us after He caused us to die, and to Him is the return/resurrection).
