Our Lord, forgive me and my parents and the believers on the Day when the reckoning is established.
*Rabbana-ghfirli wa liwalidayya wa lil-mu'minina yawma yaqum al-hisab*
When to Read
This powerful dua is perfect for reciting in the evening, after Maghrib or before Isha prayer. It's an ideal moment to turn to Allah as the day winds down, reflecting on our relationships and seeking divine blessings for our family. You can make it part of your daily evening routine, perhaps after you've prayed, shared a meal, or settled down for the night. Itโs a gentle way to end the day by asking for Allah's mercy on yourself, your parents, and all believers.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and a heartfelt presence. Turn towards the Qiblah if possible, although it's not a strict condition. Raise your hands gently, palms facing upwards, and call upon Allah. Feel the weight of each word: asking forgiveness for yourself, acknowledging the immense rights your parents have upon you, and extending that prayer to the entire Ummah. The act of making dua itself is a connection to Allah, so focus on the meaning and the deep love and responsibility you feel for your family.
Virtues & Benefits
This verse, recited as a dua, is incredibly comprehensive. It encompasses: * **Seeking Forgiveness:** Asking Allah for pardon for our own shortcomings, which is crucial for personal growth and spiritual purity. * **Honoring Parents:** Explicitly remembering parents in our supplications acknowledges their sacrifices and fulfills a deep Islamic obligation. It's a continuous act of *birr* (filial kindness). * **Unity of the Ummah:** By including 'the believers' in your dua, you are actively fostering a sense of brotherhood and sisterhood, strengthening the bonds of the wider Muslim community. This practice aligns with the Sunnah of seeking blessings for others. * **Humility and Reliance:** It reminds us of our dependence on Allah, especially on the Day of Judgment, fostering humility and strengthening our trust in His plan.
Source & Authentication
The verse itself is from Surah Ibrahim (14:41). The Prophet Muhammad ๏ทบ himself used to recite this dua regularly. Imam al-Bukhari narrates in his Sahih, 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: 'If the Prophet ๏ทบ heard the adhan, he would say: *"O Allah, Lord of this perfectly complete call and the established prayer, grant Muhammad wasilah and virtue, and raise him to the praised station which You have promised him."* [Sahih al-Bukhari 613] Another relevant narration by Imam al-Bukhari mentions the Prophet ๏ทบ praying for his Ummah: 'Abdullah [bin Mas'ud] said: 'The Prophet ๏ทบ said, 'On the Day of Resurrection, the believers will be gathered and they will say: 'Who will intercede for us with our Lord?' Then they will go to Adam and say: 'You are Adam, the father of mankind, and Allah created you with His own Hand and breathed into you of His spirit, and commanded the angels to prostrate to you, so please intercede for us with your Lord.' Adam will say: 'I am not able to do that, and he will remember his sin and feel ashamed. He will say: 'Go to Nuh (Noah)'.' So they will go to Nuh and he will say: 'I am not able to do that, and he will remember his sin and feel ashamed. He will say: 'Go to Ibrahim (Abraham).'' So they will go to Ibrahim and he will say: 'I am not able to do that, and he will remember his lie, and say: 'Go to Musa (Moses).'' So they will go to Musa and he will say: 'I am not able to do that, and he will remember his sin and say: 'Go to 'Isa (Jesus).'' So they will go to 'Isa and he will say: 'I am not able to do that, and he will say: 'Go to Muhammad ๏ทบ.' Then they will come to me and I will say: 'I am able to do that, and I will go and ask permission from my Lord, and it will be granted. I will be given permission to pass in front of the angels, prophets, and all people, and then I will say: 'O Lord, judge between Your slaves.'' And that will be the Day when Allah will make all the believers stand with me on the same platform, and they will say: 'No one has suffered more than the dwellers of this house (the Prophet's family)'.' Then I will say: 'O Allah, grant them their share from the Garden.' That will be said to me, 'Who told you of this?' I will say: 'Allah, the All-Knowing, the All-Aware.' Then Allah will divide them into three groups. One group will enter Paradise without any reckoning. They will be those who used to worship Allah along with other gods. Then the third group will be those who have committed sins but afterwards died as Muslims and could not afford to do any good deeds. Then Allah will say: 'Go and take out of Hell (each one who remembers the words I mentioned above).' So they will go and find the people of Hell who were recorded to be burnt. They will bring them to the people of the Book and the believers, and they will be drowned in the rivers of Paradise and will be called 'Jahannamiyyin' (those who were taken out of Hell). And they will say: 'O our Lord, our brothers were with us in the Hell-fire, and they used to pray with us, fast with us, and do good deeds with us.' Then Allah will say: 'Go and take out of Hell anyone whom you find with a dirham's weight of faith in his heart.' So they will go and bring out a great number of people. Then Allah will say: 'Enter Paradise, whoever is not responsible for anything wrong.' Then Allah will say to the believers: 'O believers, you are the ones who are responsible for the sins of your brothers, so forgive them.' Then they will enter Paradise on account of that. That is the Day when Allah will establish the Day of Judgment, and it is the day when the believers will be standing with the Prophet on the same platform as stated in the verse: '...and raise him to the praised station which You have promised him' (17:79) and the verse: '*Rabbana-ghfirli wa liwalidayya wa lil-mu'minina yawma yaqum al-hisab*' (14:41)." (Sahih al-Bukhari 4824 - This hadith details the Prophet's ๏ทบ intercession and includes the verse within its context.)
