In the name of Allah, I have laid down my side. O Allah, forgive my sin, purify my heart, make my affair easy for me, and protect me from Your punishment on the Day You resurrect Your creation. They (the Companions) asked: O Messenger of Allah, who would be pleased on that night? He said: Have you not heard the saying of Talhah ibn 'Ubaydillah, and his narration: 'O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, goodly provision, and acceptable deeds.'

*Bismillah, wa da'tu janbi. Allahumma ighfir li dhanbi, wa akhrij qalbiy, wa yassir li amri, wa waqqini 'adhabaka yawma tab'athu khalqak. Qalu: Ya Rasul Allah, wa man yarda tilka al-laylah? Faqala: Ama sami'ta qawla Talhah ibn 'Ubaydillah, wa hadithahu: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman nafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan.'*

When to Read

This dua is recited when a person is about to go to sleep. It serves as a comprehensive prayer seeking Allah's protection and guidance throughout the night, which is a common time for negative thoughts or temptations to arise and potentially lead to bad habits. By reciting this, you are actively seeking strength from Allah to overcome any weakness before sleep.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction as you lie down to sleep. Ensure you are in a state of wudu (ablution) if possible. Reflect on the meaning of the words and truly ask Allah for His assistance. The latter part of the hadith, while seemingly a separate supplication, is presented by the Prophet ﷺ in response to the companions' inquiry, indicating its relevance to seeking contentment and acceptance from Allah, which indirectly helps in avoiding displeasures.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful dua encompasses several vital requests for a believer. It seeks forgiveness for sins, a purified heart (free from malice and negative influences), ease in all affairs, and protection from Allah's punishment. The inclusion of seeking beneficial knowledge, goodly provision, and acceptable deeds underscores the holistic nature of the supplication, aiming for a life pleasing to Allah in all aspects. By asking for these, one is better equipped to resist temptations and bad habits, especially during the vulnerable hours of the night.

Source & Authentication

When one of you goes to his bed, he should lie on his right side and say: 'Bismillah, wa da'tu janbi. Allahumma ighfir li dhanbi, wa akhrij qalbiy, wa yassir li amri, wa waqqini 'adhabaka yawma tab'athu khalqak.' If he wishes, he may say: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman nafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan.' (O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, goodly provision, and acceptable deeds). When it was mentioned to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) that Talhah ibn 'Ubaydillah had narrated this hadith, he said: 'Add to it: and forgive me my sin, and purify my heart, and make my affair easy for me, and protect me from Your punishment on the Day You resurrect Your creation.' They said: 'O Messenger of Allah, who would be pleased on that night?' He said: 'Have you not heard the saying of Talhah ibn 'Ubaydillah, and his narration: 'O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, goodly provision, and acceptable deeds.'?' He said: 'He has sought the good of this world and the Hereafter and what is between them.'
