Daily Evening Routine
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 5088

In the name of Allah, with whose name nothing can cause harm in the earth nor in the heavens, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.

Bismillahilladhi la yaduru ma'asmihi shai'un fil-ardi wa la fis-sama'i wa Huwas-Samee'ul-Aleem

When to Read

This powerful dua is best recited in the evening, as the day draws to a close. It's a perfect addition to your sunset remembrance (dhikr) routine, just as darkness begins to set in and when worldly distractions might feel more tempting. Reciting it helps safeguard your heart and mind from harmful whispers, idle gossip, and temptations that can easily creep in during this transitional time.

How to Read

Recite this dua three times in the evening. As you say it, truly internalize the meaning: acknowledging Allah's supreme power and protection, and recognizing that nothing can harm you when you are under His care. This isn't just about the words; it's about a sincere reliance (tawakkul) on Allah, seeking His shield against all forms of spiritual and worldly harm.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua offers immense protection from harm. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ promised that whoever recites this in the morning will not be afflicted by any calamity until the evening, and whoever recites it in the evening will not be afflicted by any calamity until the morning. (Sunan Abi Dawud 5088). In the evening context, it specifically acts as a shield against the 'evening temptations' that might arise – intrusive thoughts, the lure of pointless chatter, or engaging in backbiting (ghibah) and slander, which are common pitfalls as people gather or relax. It strengthens your resolve to remain upright and focused on what is pleasing to Allah, even when opportunities for idle talk or less-than-ideal activities present themselves.

Source & Authentication

Hisham bin Urwah narrated from his father (Urwah), from Sa'id bin Al-Musayyab, from his grandfather (child of Al-Musayyab) who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever says: 'In the name of Allah, with whose name nothing can cause harm in the earth nor in the heavens, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing' (Bismillahilladhi la yaduru ma'asmihi shai'un fil-ardi wa la fis-sama'i wa Huwas-Samee'ul-Aleem) three times in the morning, he will not be afflicted by any calamity until the evening comes. And whoever says it three times in the evening, he will not be afflicted by any calamity until the morning comes." - Sunan Abi Dawud 5088
