Daily Evening Routine
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2706

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from helplessness and laziness, from cowardice and old age, and from stinginess. I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, and from the trials of life and death.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wal-jubni wal-harami, wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min 'adhab al-qabri, wa min fitnatil-mahya wal-mamat.

When to Read

This dua is particularly relevant as evening approaches, a time when many find themselves succumbing to idleness after a day's work. Recite it after the Asr prayer or before Maghrib to consciously seek Allah's protection against the inclination to delay important tasks or simply waste time.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and focus, truly embodying the seeking of refuge in Allah. Imagine the negative traits mentioned – helplessness, laziness, cowardice, old age's frailty, and stinginess – as obstacles to your productivity and spiritual growth. Consciously ask Allah to shield you from their influence. It's best recited in Arabic, but if pronunciation is a challenge, focus on the heartfelt intention.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful supplication protects you from debilitating traits that can hinder both worldly progress and spiritual advancement. Laziness (kasal) specifically prevents one from fulfilling obligations and seeking beneficial knowledge or remembrance of Allah. By seeking refuge from it, we pray for the strength and motivation to be productive members of the Ummah, utilizing our time in ways that please Allah.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to invoke Allah saying: O Allah, I seek refuge in You from helplessness and laziness, from cowardice and old age, from stinginess and from the punishment of the grave. O Allah, grant my soul its piety and purify it, for You are the Best Purifier. You are the Guardian and the Owner of it. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from an evil that I do or an evil that I do not do. (Sahih Muslim 2706)
