O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the overwhelming of debt and the subjugation of men.
Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijal.
When to Read
This powerful dua is excellent to recite as the evening approaches, or at any time you feel the weight of the day's worries, anxieties, or the creeping sense of hopelessness. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this specific supplication, and its comprehensiveness makes it ideal for seeking Allah's protection against emotional and mental burdens, especially as the day ends and introspection can sometimes lead to despair.
How to Read
Recite this dua sincerely, raising your hands as is the custom when making supplication. Focus on the meaning of each phrase, truly seeking Allah's protection. It's best recited after the Asr prayer or before sunset, but its validity extends to any part of the evening when these feelings arise. Make sure your heart is present and you are directing your plea solely to Allah (SWT).
Virtues & Benefits
This dua is a shield against the heavy burdens of anxiety (hamm) and sorrow (hazan), which can often intensify in the quiet of the evening. By seeking refuge in Allah from weakness and lethargy (ajz and kasal), we ask for the strength to act and persevere. The plea against cowardice and stinginess (jubn and bukhl) addresses character flaws that can lead to regret and isolation. Finally, asking for protection against overwhelming debt and the harshness of people (ghalabatid-dayn wa qahrir-rijal) seeks relief from significant worldly pressures that can fuel despair. It's a comprehensive plea for peace of mind and emotional well-being.
