Dua for Repelling the Evils of the Night

Daily Evening Routine
Sahih HadithSunan Abi Dawud 5088

In the name of Allah, with whose name nothing on earth nor in the sky can harm, and He is the Hearing, the Knowing.

Bismillahi alladhi la yadhurru ma'asmihi shay'un fil-ardi wa la fis-sama'i wa huwas-Samee'ul-'Aleem

When to Read

This powerful dua is recommended to be recited three times every morning and evening. Specifically for the evening, it’s part of our Sunnah to say it as we prepare for rest, seeking Allah's protection throughout the night.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and full conviction in Allah's power. Utter each word clearly, focusing on its meaning and placing your trust in the Almighty. It’s a practice of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, so embodying his method of recitation – with presence and submission – is key.

Virtues & Benefits

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ informed us about the immense protection this dua offers. He stated that whoever recites it three times in the morning will not be afflicted by any calamity until the evening, and whoever recites it three times in the evening will not be afflicted by any calamity until the morning. (Sunan Abi Dawood 5088). This means Allah grants a shield against harm, both seen and unseen, for the duration specified. It's a beautiful way to secure our well-being by remembering Allah's all-encompassing attributes: His name, which carries all blessings and protection; His Hearing, as He hears our pleas; and His Knowledge, as He knows all things, including the future dangers we seek refuge from.

The narration states: 'Abdullah ibn Khubayb narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: 'Recite Surat Al-Ikhlas and Surat Al-Falaq and Surat An-Nas in the evening and morning three times, and they will suffice you in all aspects.' [Sunan Abi Dawood 5082]. In another narration, it is mentioned: 'Uthman ibn Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) was besieged. While he was in the house, he said: 'I shall narrate a hadith to you, and I shall not narrate it except to ward off the evil that has befallen me today, based on what I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' He then mentioned a hadith similar to the one narrated by Abu Dawud, which includes: 'Bismillahi alladhi la yadhurru ma'asmihi shay'un fil-ardi wa la fis-sama'i wa huwas-Samee'ul-'Aleem.' (three times). (Sunan Abi Dawood 5088).
