Daily Evening Routine
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 5054

In the name of Allah, I lay down on my side. O Allah, forgive me my sins, drive away my devil, release me from my pledge, and place me in the highest assembly.

Bismillahi, wada'tu janbi. Allahumma-ghfir li dhanbi, wakhsa' shaytani, wa fukka rihani, waj'alni fin-nadiyil a'la.

When to Read

This beautiful dua is recited as you are settling down to sleep, right before you physically lie down on your side. It's a perfect way to end your day, bringing consciousness to your actions and seeking Allah's protection and forgiveness as you transition into rest.

How to Read

Recite this dua softly to yourself as you prepare to sleep. It's about making a sincere connection with Allah, acknowledging your reliance on Him for safety, forgiveness, and a peaceful rest. The act of saying it while laying on your side follows the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates several profound requests. 'Allahumma-ghfir li dhanbi' seeks forgiveness for sins, a crucial step before rest. 'Wakhsa' shaytani' asks for protection from the whispers and temptations of Shaytan. 'Wa fukka rihani' means seeking release from the burden of obligations or potential accountability, a plea for ease. Finally, 'waj'alni fin-nadiyil a'la' expresses a desire to be among the righteous in the hereafter, a beautiful aspiration to carry into your sleep. While this specific dua doesn't mention loved ones directly, the intention to seek Allah's comprehensive protection and forgiveness before sleep naturally extends to encompassing the well-being of all those we care about in our hearts.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Al-Bara' bin 'Azib that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'When you go to bed, perform Wudu as you do for prayer. Then lie down on your right side and say: "Bismillahi, wada'tu janbi. Allahumma-ghfir li dhanbi, wakhsa' shaytani, wa fukka rihani, waj'alni fin-nadiyil a'la." (In the name of Allah, I lay down on my side. O Allah, forgive me my sins, drive away my devil, release me from my pledge, and place me in the highest assembly). And say: "Bismillahi tawakkaltu 'alallah." (In the name of Allah I rely upon Allah).' (Sunan Abi Dawud 5054. The hadith was declared Hasan by Al-Albani).
