بِاسْمِكَ رَبِّ وَضَعْتُ جَنْبِي، وَبِكَ أَرْفَعُهُ، إِنْ أَمْسَكْتَ نَفْسِي فَارْحَمْهَا، وَإِنْ أَرْسَلْتَهَا فَاحْفَظْهَا بِمَا تَحْفَظُ بِهِ عِبَادَكَ الصَّالِحِينَ

With Your name, my Lord, I lie down, and with Your name I rise. If You take my soul, have mercy on it. And if You keep it, protect it with what You protect Your righteous servants.

Bismika Rabbi wada'tu janbi, wa bika arfa'uhu. In amsakta nafsi, farhamha. Wa in arsal-taha, fahfadh-ha bima tahfadh-u bihi 'ibadak-as-salihin.

When to Read

Recite this dua just before you lie down to sleep. It's part of the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ for retiring for the night, helping to usher in a sense of peace and reliance on Allah before drifting off.

How to Read

Recite it sincerely, reflecting on the meaning. Place your right hand under your cheek or head as you lie down, if possible, as this was the practice of the Prophet ﷺ. Visualize your life and soul being entrusted to Allah's care throughout the night.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'When any of you wants to sleep, he should lie on his right side and say: بِاسْمِكَ رَبِّ وَضَعْتُ جَنْبِي، وَبِكَ أَرْفَعُهُ، إِنْ أَمْسَكْتَ نَفْسِي فَارْحَمْهَا، وَإِنْ أَرْسَلْتَهَا فَاحْفَظْهَا بِمَا تَحْفَظُ بِهِ عِبَادَكَ الصَّالِحِينَ (Bismika Rabbi wada'tu janbi, wa bika arfa'uhu.
