Dua for a Tranquil Evening and Protection from Despair

Daily Evening Routine
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6369

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from distress and sorrow, I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from being overwhelmed by debt and overpowered by men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhl, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijal.

When to Read

This dua is particularly beneficial to recite as evening approaches, a time when worries can sometimes weigh heavier. It's a powerful way to cleanse the heart and mind before the night sets in, preventing feelings of despair from taking root. Make it a part of your evening reflection, perhaps after Asr prayer or just before Maghrib.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and focus, truly feeling the need for Allah's protection. It's best recited after the obligatory prayers, or at any moment you feel the need for spiritual fortification against negative thoughts. Imagine Allah's mercy enveloping you as you utter these words.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua seeks refuge from various debilitating states: 'distress and sorrow' (al-hamm wal-hazan) that can cloud our minds and bring about despair; 'incapacity and laziness' (al-'ajz wal-kasal) that hinder our progress in deen and dunya; 'cowardice and stinginess' (al-jubn wal-buhl) that prevent us from acting righteously and giving charity; and 'being overwhelmed by debt and overpowered by men' (ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijal) which are significant worldly burdens. By seeking refuge in Allah from these, we actively invite peace, strength, and resilience into our lives, fostering a positive mindset that can ward off evening despair.
